There is a fun, easy to learn and very popular system called FATAL you could check out.

Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)05:47 UTC+1 No.32342838 Report

Something simple and easy to learn. Avoid D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder. Start with D&D 4e if you must, it's reasonably simple, but I'm other other anons will have some good recommendations for good beginner games.

Come on, man. Don't do that.

Bunnies & Burrows

Try to find a group you like first and foremost, system doesn't matter nearly as much as the group does.

If I had to choose a starting system though, D&D 4e.

What do you like? Modern? Horror? Sci-fi? Fantasy? A mix?

Keep it simple, avoid games with an excessive number of rulebooks to play.

Look at something "Labyrinth Lord" if you're not a massive weeaboo of the type that plays 4e

...I'm there too, anon. I'm a completely unwashed pleb, I've never been on /tg/ before and I barely know the first thing about tabletop games besides a few games of D&D I played as a kid.

I wish I had a mentor on this sort of thing, as gay as that sounds, but I pick things up quicker that way.

1) You want a game with light rules, so it's easy to both learn and play.
2) You want a game that other people are playing, because it's a lot easier to join an experienced group and learn as you go.
3) Numbers 1 and 2 are pretty much mutually exclusive, so you're screwed.

I'd honestly like to just stick with Fantasy, but I know there are some popular Sci-Fi ones as well (like 40k).

You want Savage Worlds.

Its rules light, but still very versatile. Easy to learn and run.

And its pretty popular.

I'm looking to get into tabletop RPGs. But I need a good DM that is free and is willing to put in the work as well as other players that are chill and only there to have fun.

SW is more like rules-medium, but that still makes it a good deal simpler than recent iterations of D&D. And yeah, it's one of the more popular RPGs after D&D / PF, but the gap between the former and latter is enormous. Many, many times more people play D&D / PF.

GURPS

You can stay pleb all your life, or you can switch to a system that is functionally superior in every way and allows you to modify it as much as necessary to fit your style of DMing.

seriously, suck a dick. Tired of the DnD and pathfinder hate on this fucking board. 3.5 was the first rpg for a LOT of people and it suited them just fine.
>>

>>32343590
It was the first because there was no other option. Nowadays competition has forced game makers to improve.

>>32342777
In a few months the new edition of D&D comes out, and it looks to be good. Do something cheap and simple to get started, but I would wait for the new version before making a serious investment in terms of rulebooks.

I'd recommend trying something super simple like FATE (the stripped-down version of which is free on the maker's website.)

When you have an effective sample size of 1, like a lot of people do, it's kind of hard to make comparative value judgments. If you've never played or even seen a video game before, you might find a crappy game from 30 years ago to be fascinating, but that still doesn't make it a good game... and it doesn't mean that you couldn't have more fun with something better. And whatever else it is, 3.5 is not a good game for beginners.

Do you actually mean tabletop rpgs when you say tabletop rpgs or do you just mean pen and paper rpgs in general? The tabletop games are usually more combat oriented and less about narrative when it comes to what their rules handle, compared to many other pen and paper rpgs, like Dust Devils or 3:16.

MICROLITE D20. It will teach you basic DnD and Pathfinder. Also, any D6 mini-rpg.

Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)10:03 UTC+1 No.32346829 Report

I'd say your experience will be largely shaped by who you play with. Worry about that before you decide on a system.

A lot of people had this hobby ruined for them because awful groups putting them off it forever.

Seconding Labyrinth Lord and other retroclones, especially Swords & Wizardry.

Very rules light and a phenomenal classic D&D experience.
