Anonymous 05/26/14(Mon)00:12 UTC+1 No.32358414 Report

I'm stumped, /tg/. I'm trying to think of a name for a group of criminal 'guards'. They're sort of the mirror version of town guards - they enforce the general idea of "honour amongst thieves" but also serve as the town kingpin's private army.

I've ruled out:
>Night's Watch (too GoT)
>Blackguard (too many demon connotations)
>Enforcers (too cyberpunk)

But I can't find something that sounds right.

Setting is Forgotten Realms if that helps.

I appreciate the help but I need something... snappier. Something that also implies a title, like a member of the Night's Watch would be a Night's Watchman, or the Blackguard would be a... Blackguard.

Still, I am appreciative of the effort.

Could have them be fond of excessively brutal punishments to people who violate the 'underside' 'laws'. Like crucifying people.

Thus calling them Crossmen. Known for excessive and enthusiastic brutality.

Collector's is a no-go, used "the Collector" as a Small Bad Evil Guy. Boogiemen is too jaunty, I'm looking for something rather grim-faced. Same goes for Hatters (which also makes me think of Dishonored). Boss's Men is a good one. On the list it goes.

You know what? I really like this thread. Why don't we have threads like this more often? Surely /tg/ can't be that good at picking names.

Also, another suggestion: the Brigade. The official name for the members is Brigade Brother, but everyone just calls them the Brigands for obvious reasons.

The Sons of [insert property deity here], if you're going for a group of military group of thugs.

The Sons of Mars -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamertines

Alternately, you could go for something like The Knife of [deity /concept], if you want to play up a thieves' or assassins' guild angle. This would shorten to "the Knives" for casual reference.

Maybe draw their name from their origin. Like if they arose from the carpenter's guild (which branched out as it grew in power), then something like The Nail (possibly punish people by hammering a nail through their palm). If they originated with the masons, then maybe The Stone, or The Levelers (to play up the idea of justice and fairness). If blacksmiths, then The Hammer or The Anvil or even The Forge. Or even a naked reference to their origin, like The Bakers.

Or maybe they're identified by something they wear (like the Brownshirts) or don't wear (sans-culottes), or the way they groom themselves (the roundheads). So you just have to think of something distinctive about them (a bandoleer or sash, a bandanna, arm band, etc.) and figure out a name to associate with it. The Red Bands, The Veil / Cowl, etc.

Or maybe it comes down to a weapon they use or a ceremonial one they are associated with. The Long Knives. The Falchion, The Crowbills, The Mattock, The Shamshir.

Or maybe a symbol or animal they are associated with. The Raven. The Wolves of [city]. The Ghost Tiger. The Crooked Cross. The Black Spot. The Mark.

Or maybe something related to their ethnicity or cultural heritage. The Isaurians. The Iberians. The Magyars.

Could always go with something referential. Make them work in two parts, the Candles and Ducks/Duckies. Candles are the tall, thinner, more business like guys who do the polite shake downs and have the best public persona.
Ducks/Duckies are the guys who beat the shit out of people. Nobody wants to meet the Ducks.

It's a bowling reference. Candlepin. Duckpin. Kingpin.
