Fact: The Bahrag were the greatest Titan build ever and look fucking awesome whether you have their head fully extended or closed.

I still believe they are the pinnacle of the technic portion of Bionicle. However, as they gradually moved on to action figure territory, there were some amazing builds for that style of set. Brutaka is one of them.

I'm used to having Bionicle dreams, especially when a new line is coming out. I'd always dream about being in a store about to buy whatever was nearly released, say, the Mistika, and then wake up disappointed that I still had a week to go.

Since Bionicle died the dreams became even more depressing, as they involved me going into a random toystore and finding the old Bionicle sets that I never bought. And it was nearly always Takua and Pewku.

I think I might have a problem.

I feel like there is a lot of CCBS hate here just because Hero Factory killed Bionicle, and while CCBS is a bit more simple than the Bionicle Technic-style build system, It still gives plenty of options. One thing that I love about the new sets is just how well armored and better proportioned they are than the old standard Inika build. Looking at Tahu you can see just how thick the upper chest is, its neat.

Considering all signs point to a reboot with what GregF has been saying, we cant be sure there will be an Artahka. However, as we "know" there will be combiners, and the fact that there is a character from the old lore associated with a mask of the same name as that that plays a central role in the new lore, Artahka is still a definite possibility.

CCBS is smart as hell tbh. Instead of Lego having specialized pieces for their lines, they have a basic skeleton for all them that can be customized as they see fit. The same pieces are used here and there, yeah, but they're different enough. You're not gonna mistake a chima for an HF or a bionicle and vice versa. Saves them money and has nice play value. Those joints are sturdy.

Anonymous 09/20/14(Sat)15:21 UTC+1 No.4428343 Report

So why are they bringing this back? Didn't they kill Bionicle because it was selling poorly? What makes them think this will sell well now?
Not that I'm complaining, I fucking loved Bionicle.
>>
Anonymous 09/20/14(Sat)15:22 UTC+1 No.4428344 Report

Im still at a loss for how their torsos go together. We can see what appears to be those 4 round tooth gear things that made up the Boxor on the backs of Onua and Pohatu, presumably on the others too. We can also see a lot of thickness to the back of the torso. I have a feeling the torso construction is responsible for that massive piece count but am curious as to how.
>>
Anonymous 09/20/14(Sat)15:28 UTC+1 No.4428347 Report

>>4428343
It didn't sell poorly, just mediocre-ly. They specifically canceled it at a point when it was still bringing in profits, so that if they brought it back, it would still bring them money. Coupled with the generated hype over the relaunch, it's expected that it will do better than when it was canceled.

It's clever. They canceled it when it was doing okay but not spectacularly, so that when they bring it back, it will probably do even better.

We're definitely getting combos, but having their instructions in the physical manuals might be a stretch. Even the Mixels Max combos, where all three sets of a single color combine, have their instructions only online. The designers have been working since 2012 to give the sets nice-looking backs. The solutions work half of the time.

You can always make it look nice in MOCs though. It's easy with the current library of CCBS parts.

Also, BIONICLE 2015 is looking to have nicely-covered backs, what with the gearboxes the new Mata have. Here's a gearbox mockup from EB (pic related is different from the link): https://www.flickr.com/photos/126493865@N07/15110779767/in/photostream/

CCBS - Character and Creature Building System

It's a library of pieces implemented in 2011 that standardizes parts for action figure building. The core of the system is the ball-and-cup, just as the core of regular LEGO System is the stud-and-tube. The pieces were designed to look simpler in order to accommodate compatibility with regular System bricks and pieces, but also have armor add-ons that give the armor more detail.

I wouldn't say that. You just don't use pins and axles to attach every piece of armor like you did with the old Bionicle sets. Instead pins and axles are reserved for adding more Technic elements and assemblies. Also weapons.

It's a damn good compromise IMO.

>>4428629
This guy explained it pretty well. Bionicle 1.0 was generally only useful as Bionicle. CCBS has a "blank" skeleton and armor system that can be applied to just about any theme. You then apply theme or set specific elements like heads, weapons, and armor attachments to make the sets look more unique.

It's good for Lego because if themes fail the system can be reused in different ways without Lego sinking a fuck ton of money into specialized pieces. It's good for us because it saves Lego money and keeps costs down comparatively.

Well, since these images match the earlier boxes picture we got (the one with the size of each package specified), that would mean these are older than even the colored display box leak, which actually had all of the sets with backgrounds.

The set list leaks happened after the original image leak, and given the time frame of things it would be simple to assume that the set list had more finalized names.

>This just seems like every character has the same frame and they just need to stick a new piece of armour on top

Nah. I mean, it kind of started out that way, at least as far as actual sets go, but the system has grown a lot since it's inception. There are tons of useful pieces now.

Look at it this way: Old Bionicle (Bionicle 1.0?) was just straight up Bionicle. It was born out of Technic but it had a ton of specialized pieces. The big changes CCBS made are a standardized system useful for multiple themes and a higher emphasis on ball joint attachments for the smaller, standard constraction figures. The former avoids heavy specialization and the latter makes it easier for younger kids to assemble sets and make their own creations.

And really, when you think about it, couldn't

>every character has the same frame and they just need to stick a new piece of armour on top

describe 06-09 as well? Difference being that those pieces were larger and more specialized. CCBS uses a standard skeleton system with a ton of different limb pieces. It's like the inner frames you see on Plamo.

The Toa Nuva went to the "core" of the Matoran Universe, where a bunch of blind and mode-locked Makuta were stirring up shit. They woke up Mata Nui, who turned out to be a planet-sized robot that housed the Matoran Universe inside him. All the Makuta got killed.

But then, Makuta Teridax (the guy we've been calling Makuta since '01) took over the universe and exiled Mata Nui's spirit into space sealed in the Mask of Life.

Mata Nui landed on a desert planet where he was originally built, made a new body, made friends, a gladiatress had a crush on him, then they all defeated the local bad guy and united the villages, literally: they combined to form another giant mech.

Makuta arrived to beat up Mata Nui, who now used that smaller giant robot as his body. Tahu got devolved to his original Mata form and used some special armor to kill all Rahkshi and acquire their powers. Mata Nui bashed Makuta's head into a moon and killed him.

Then he united the desert planet with its moons to turn it back into its original form. The Matoran Universe got destroyed, so all the inhabitants went to live on this "new" world, and Mata Nui went back to nap in the Mask of Life.

In between all this, a bunch of horrible fanfic-tier web serials happened that left a hundred different plot threads, each more retarded than the other, hanging because the writer gave up.

2001: Toa Mata wash ashore on Mata Nui the island and fight off animals infected by the evil Makuta, saving the Matoran villagers, and looking for a way to awaken the sleeping Great Spirit Mata Nui.
2002: Toa Mata fight off Bohrok bugs (who actually are literally cleaning the island, removing everything that isn't a rock) awakened by Makuta, Toa Mata transformed into Toa Nuva
2003: Toa Nuva fight off elite Bohrok who wanted to bring the swarm back; Takua the Matoran historian stumbles upon the Mask of Life -- turns out he was destined to wear it and become Takanuva, Toa of Light. Makuta is defeated. The underground city of Metru Nui is discovered.
2004: Flashback! The Turaga, village elders on the island Mata Nui, used to be the Toa Metru, the Toa of the underground city of Metru Nui. They fought Makuta, who trapped the Matoran into amnesia balls. The Toa Metru bring a handful of amnesia balls up to the island above.
2005: Flashback pt 2! The Toa Metru return to the city to get the rest of the amnesia balls, but it is now overrun by giant spiders, who mutate them and force them to go on a quest to save themselves, the city, and the Matoran.
2006: Flashback over. The Matoran are back in Metru Nui, and they find out that the Great Spirit Mata Nui is dying. Toa Nuva are sent to Voya Nui to find the Mask of Life, but are captured and barely escape the clutches of the Piraka (who are being subtly nudged towards the Mask of Life by the essence of a still-alive Makuta). Takanuva forms a group of Matoran to go and save them, and those Matoran transform into Toa due to destiny. The Mask of Life is found by these Toa Inika, but it is lost into the sea around the island of Voya Nui.
2007: The Toa Inika go underwater, and are mutated by water in the Pit into the Toa Mahri. Toa Matoro goes on dreary adventures with Makuta. They get the Mask of Life, and Matoro turns out to be the one destined to use it to save the Great Spirit from death. Matoro dies in the process.

They succeed, and it turns out that Mata Nui, their universe, is a giant robot whose face lay underneath the island of Mata Nui (which the Bohrok cleaned). Makuta found his way into the brain of the robot, and takes over the universe. He ejects the spirit of Mata Nui, which is now contained in the Mask of Life.

2009: Mata Nui in the Mask of Life lands on Bara Magna, a nearby desert planet (that used to be a lush diverse planet until an event caused it to split into three planets). He forms friends, finds out about the powers of the Mask of Life, and prepares the parts of a prototype version of the Mata Nui Robot that was on the planet.

2010: Makuta in the Great Spirit Robot finds his way to Bara Magna, and Mata Nui in the Prototype Robot fights him. Makuta accidentally kills himself by pulling one of the other planets towards his face using giant robot gravity powers.
Down on the surface of Bara Magna, Toa Tahu of the Nuva, Takanuva, and some of Mata Nui's newfound friends fight off an attack by the armies of Makuta. Good guys win, Mata Nui uses the Mask of Life to fix the three planets, and then finally lies dormant in the mask as the inhabitants of the Great Spirit Robot and Bara Magna mix and create a new civilization.

Not to be a heretic, but a potential solution to Gali's disappointing mask may be to dremel just below the triangle-base of her rebreather-lips, which is clearly evident and reminiscent of the original Kanohi. The real problem IMO is the chin extension on this new mask.

Man, Voya Nui seemed so hopeless from the start. The villain sets came first for one thing, and they were a lot bigger than the Toa Nuva, who proceeded to get their shit kicked in after we'd watch them be this powerful force of badassery over the years. It was cool seeing the Inika rise up and give us some hope. I was invested in that shit when I was younger. Don't even get me started on the move along promo, oh god the hype

I remember I owned one book, it had a Piraka on the cover and the story was the Piraka start controlling the Marotan and the Nuva are on their way and get their asses kicked. Is there anywhere I can continue the series online?

Both are canon, they generally cover different events and sometimes something from the comics comes up in the books (e.g. Tahtork) or vice-versa

In the rare cases where they contradict, I THINK the books win out

There are also online stories delivered in a serial format, those are canon too

And a couple of short stories, those are also canon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVTo3yccekg

Or the legendary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyUnSuYYs18

Also, is anyone else going to miss all the specialized parts and new builds every wave? The specialized parts restricted us, but with restrictions in art come more people finding ways to utilize what they have, and sometimes, bend or break the rules.

I'm going to miss the adventure of building. Now it'll just be "click", "snap", done.

I'm irked on how they are held, but that's nothing 2 extra pieces can't fix.

That's horrendously late-90's early 00's. I fucking love it.

I'm just gonna throw this out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XmDYJBZZdc

It's in the same style as the other bonkle beats, but god DAMN is it emotional.

That golden mask looks very similar to chirox' mask, but seeing how the protectors and jaller mahri don't have any connection, this probably doesn't mean anything either
