Do you think Hasbro would have success with a semi-premium line of Transformers comparable to Marvel Select or DCC? Something that lies between Generations (which has made some sacrifices to stay affordable and appealing to the young target demographic) and Masterpiece (which is pretty much a line of slavish G1 representations). The thriving third party scene makes me think that Hasbro is missing out on an opportunity to cash in on something similar.

$20-$25 deluxes, $35-40 voyagers, a couple $60-65 leaders here and there. The older target audience and increased price would allow for less gimmicks, more parts, and better paint. To clearly distinguish the line from Masterpiece, they could focus on more heavily stylized representations of characters (or just go the IDW route I suppose, and let Generations do its own thing with the 2015 combiners and whatever is beyond that). I could even see a choice third party company "selling out" to Hasbro and producing figures for this line exclusively (Fansproject, Mech Ideas, or Toyworld seem like they could handle it).

>TL;DR would you support a semi-premium "Transformers Select" line?

So you want the safety standard laws and budget restrictions worked within a product of a third party when their entire purpose is to bypass them.

Honestly, no, I don't think its a good idea. The marvel selects work because there isn't any competition on that level. Hasbro/Takara already has a high grade collectors line in Masterpiece and does special releases in Platinum. They would be competing against themselvesfor the collector budget, plus the very relevant expenses of doing the tooling and molds.

It feels like it would never work in the long run.

All the kiddy gimmick toys are rotting on shelves, but I'm hard-pressed to find any of the Generations deluxes right now, and wave 2 voyagers are also hard to find.

I hope all those retarded dino-jousters and $13 FABs or whatever the fuck they are never move so Hasbro stops making so many of them. Every fucking store is FLOODED with them and no one wants them. Did they (and the stores) learn nothing from IM3?

Stores wouldn't stock them. Maybe TRU, but that'd be it. Too expensive and too niche for stores like Wal-Mart and Target to stock them. They stopped getting MPs a while back, remember? Same idea, these 'premium' toy lines just don't sell well enough for stores to devote shelf space to and Hasbro would make more money doing something else.

The problem is, most third party engineering isn't all that good compared to Hasbro. These companies are still using sliding the upper leg out of the lower leg style transformations when Hasbro has basically stopped doing that since Classics outside of a few Legends figures.

They should do something like Beast Wars then, put gimmicks on toys with two average to good modes without creating another toyline to leave rotting on shelves.

Kids love gimmicks but if they are given the choice between a toy that is gimpy and full of gimmicks or another that just looks imposing and can transform, they'll choose the second one.

I had a Police Academy Hightower figure as a kid that came with a small scooter you could use as a flail by flicking a lever on the back. I loved it. Heck, the Police Academy toys where pretty great.

Anyway. I think kids play with different things in different ways. At a base level the thing has to look cool. The one step TF toys look kind of dopey due to the designs being squeezed around the engineering rather than being developed together.

I do think the movie designs not having many instantly recognizeable vehicle bits on their chest this time around is a request from Hasbro though.

Not the guy you were asking, but I have him and he's great. Transformation is super simplistic, but he just has a ton of character. He's a fun little guy for collectors and I think he's an amazing first Transformer to give to a kid.

Here's my two cents on the sales problem: digital interactivity. Kids have iPads, kids fucking love shit that goes with their mobile devices. Why not develop a simplistic version of Skylanders/Infinity for mobile devices and have a really nice Cyberverse line with NFC chips that interact with the game? Parents are way more willing to shell out 10-15 on a toy than 15-20 and then they really hook kids on the collectability aspect. Shit, look at the dough Funko is raking in. Sure, you can get a Pop Vinyl for eight bucks, but when your girlfriend ABSOLUTELY NEEDS EVERY DISNEY CHARACTER, that's major goddamn income.

There's also weird inconsistencies in the marketing between the films and toys in my opinion. The films are all tits, ass, explosions, and three hours long, and yet half the products on the shelves are aimed at toddlers. Isn't that what Rescue Bots is for? I'm not gonna buy my child a spiky satanic t-rex from the same movie I had to change his diapers twice in the middle of.

I think that was the intention with the red logo Transformers packages for AoE stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if when the 20th anniversary is over, the Generations packages start using that logo for 2015.

It should be noted that the AoE main line is apparently considered Generations by Hasbro. Which I guess means that they consider any standard lines (like TFP had) Generations style figures.

The entirety of that 25% crap being made up of the Grimlock mold. His bot mode is wonky, his limb mode is lame and he can't hold his shape in either of em. His only redeeming factor is his vehicle mode, but even that has it's massive issues.

The other three are pretty great figures, not excellent and far from perfect but quirky enough to be fun. I may even just try and hunt down another of either Heavyload or Hightower and see if I can mod him into a superior back-hoe-former...

Going to carve up Rhinox's head to fit the tusks in(and make them rotate up for robot mode), fix the alt-mode head so it's got that lovely grin, and attach the tail to the butt-flap. I loved the bastard because he was a big, ugly bruiser of a character, that beast mode the stuff of childhood nightmare. Fuzors in general were my favorite figures back then, crazy creatures that you'd never seen before that turned into robots. If they did a new AirRazor, I'd buy two so I could make a Skyhammer with the second.

Yeah, I remember him being really beefy for a deluxe, and he had a kind of cool-weird design going on as opposed to a lot of fuzors who were just regular weird. Also, both of his gimmicks were ace, even if the water gun kind of didn't work. I'm thinking I'm wrong on this one, but I also remember him having a lot of articulation for his day.

I'm not sure. I got him a while ago for super cheap on eBay, but at the time I didn't know what the actual figure's paint looked like so I always assumed he was normal. There has been a lot of research and I've never found anything else like him online but what I find strange is that his mouse eyes, head mouse nose and hand/arm details are painted and it almost looks clean enough to be factory applied. Most likely a custom? Yes, but part of me isn't certain.

G1 isn't subbed to my knowledge. Headmasters/Masterforce/Victory are (get fansubs over the official ones though). Zone is subbed. No Beast Era, sadly. Car Robots just got subbed about a month ago. No Micron Legend (Armada), but Super Link (Energon) and Galaxy Force (Cybertron) are. SL and GF are two I really recommend getting the Japanese version of. SL is still heavily flawed, but the English dub was fucked up royally. Don't think Animated and Prime are subbed.

I don't see how they hindered '07 Prime. He just doesn't have a waist joint, probably due to the transformation and how it would most likely make the joint fragile.

Ironhide BARELY has his electronics hinder his waist. If they wanted to add a waist joint, there could have been ways to make a workaround.

Cybertron actually has a pretty good dub. Yes, they changed and added more dialogue, but it's more like comparing the changes in script from FF6 to the SNES FF3 than the rip and rape of Super Sentai into Power Ranges (but I saw Cybertron dubbed first, so I'm biased). Armada and Energon are probably better subbed though.

Car Robots, though, is much more palpable watching subbed than the dubbed RID, but I've only found a few episodes subbed.

I don't think G1 is available subbed, but the Japanese Transformers Trilogy was released in America subbed only. Headmasters was okay, I really liked Masterforce for the same reasons I liked Cybertron, and I haven't gotten to watch Victory yet.

I don't really want to "argue" this, but in most of these toys, the electronics take up a fairly large box area that the figure would be better off without (in my own opinion). It would help their balance, keep them more streamlined or accurate, or otherwise their budget could be spent on better things (again, in my own opinion).

It's alright, a massive step up from the likes of Armada and Cybertron's dubs, but still beneath the basic level of dubbed kids anime back then/now.

Also, it really depends on if you want to hear characters talk nonstop over the transformation stock footage every episode, or if you just want the music and sound effects of Galaxy Force.

The new dialogue was amusing at first, but got annoying REAL fast when it felt like they were running out of things to say, and it became obvious how badly they had to force some conversations.

Most love from it comes from when it was brand-new, and was a breather from the heaviness of BM, and a nostalgic return to Autobots. with so much other media now, it's lost it's luster.

Depends on what you want. That's the only black deco (so far). If you want a G1 deco, the best is probably Takara's mainline release. If you want screen-accurate (meaning rusty/dirty), there are two options, and there are pros and cons to each.

I'd like one with a movie paint scheme, but one that looks accurate. Like I said, I've been out of the loop for some time. That picture blew me away. I bought an optimus a few years ago from the movie and it looks pretty horrible. Accuracy is everything for me.

Thanks for all of your help.

Movie Prime toys are pretty good if you don't have any version of the RotF Leader, pick it up. And Evasion OP is the star of the AoE line.

Pretty disappointed in how the TRU JP release turned out in final product pictures.

Here's the two movie-accurate ones. Left is Hasbro's. It's coming in a 3-pack with two other toys. Right is Takara's, which is an exclusive (but still easy to get in Western stores, it just costs a bit more). And like >>4293080 said, he doesn't look as nice in the new pictures.

Japanese versions have more paint apps. And those black versions are limited releases.

But the real reason is that Japanese toy prices are just higher in general. Or rather, American toy prices are really cheap compared to the rest of the world.

By the way, you know how BB Bumblebee is quite tall for a deluxe? Because of that, its japanese repaint is shoved into voyager packaging, and at a price point between their deluxe and voyager prices.

No different weapons, all of them are DotM Megs shotgun. There is a shapeways version of Prime Striker Cannon though, but I'm hoping for a full accessory pack with a sword, maybe some plug in shoulder pads, and a gun.

I have a theory: Transformers toys are designed, in terms of sculpt and engineering, to conform to standard western prices. But, compared to other, comparable Japanese toys, they cost less. So Takara could release them in Japan for about the same cost as US figures, but since a lot of the competition costs more, they can afford to add in paint apps and bump up the price. Where as, Hasbro has to compete with $10-20 toys and has to keep prices and costs low enough that their figures are competitive to other US retail lines.

It's not really available exactly on any toy. The Evasion Mode Optimus has a shotgun, but it's straight-up DOTM Megatron's. In TF4, the gun has panels on it with his blue/red flame deco and is slightly differently proportioned.

Give it a few weeks and some third party like Dr. Wu will have it made. Or maybe that upcoming remold of the leader toy will have it, although I figure that will keep to the sword/shield.

One of the things about the UT is that, even if the dubs are bad overall, I still have nostalgic attachment to the idea of them. Much like how people who grew up with the G1 cartoon has a romanticized idea of what it was, I have the same view of the UT.

So Armada Jetifre is like the coolest (as in, an 10 year old's perception of cool guy ever.) Like a robot Duo Maxwell with some Wolverine mixed in. He can take down entire Decepticon armies by himself. Plus he was a space shuttle, and that was awesome. Generations figure when?

How else will you replicate that episode where he makes a bunch of clones and teases us with the idea of a full set of TFP Seekers only to cockblock us? But make sure it's the FE.

My options are BH Ultra Magnus, Evasion Optimus, and Grimlock. Which one?

Next two MP molds are Laserwave and a 1985 seeker (Retooled from Starscream). Laserwave comes with a smaller gun that matches his altmode.
Micron Legend Convoy comes out in 2017 with a release with a trailer he combines with and a black repaint all well as one based on his second coloration later. MP Jetfire and MP ML Ultra Magnus release in 2019 instead of the trailer in 3rd and 4th releases respectively.

DOTM Leader Sentinel Prime has a fairly simple transformation. But actually getting it to physically work is another story. That's where the complexity of movie transformations come from, really. They aren't really confusing, but on a number of them it takes a lot of precise lining up. I can prep ROTF Optimus for vehicle mode in about a minute, but actually making sure everything lines up properly is a chore.

Even though it was basically the BW show originally getting the toy colors wrong, rather than this prevailing incorrect belief that the visual disparity was somehow Hasbro's fault.

Takara made their toys AFTER the show premired. But Hasbro had the designs underway well before the show ever started production

Yeah, actually. Not just jets, but my Decepticon air stuff is all in vehicle mode predominantly.

I use a Gundam one, but I'm considering getting one of these as well. If it works out nicely post results.

I don't entirely get the appeal of Evasion OP. Not to say it's shit or something (it might be the best Voyager Prime from any movie, I have no idea) but it being some magical toy of wonderment entirely eludes me. It's a Classics OP with Movie aesthetics, a shotgun he wasn't designed to hold, and a worse vehicle mode (that hollow back end and the gappy transparent windows touching his arms are offputting). The robot mode is indisputably really cool, but I would think people would take issue with it for the same reasons they did the PRID stuff sacrificing the vehicle mode for the robot mode.

If that black one wasn't likely going to be scalped to hell,I'd get it just because the darker windows make the cab look less broken, but the normal ones just don't do anything for me.
