I'm going on a trip to Manhattan next month and I'm looking for a little bit of advice. First off, we're driving from Ohio, so we will have a car with us. Would it be easier to stay in Newark and take a shuttle into the city, or would we be better off driving into the city and staying there? We'll be there for three nights, so that's four days of using the bus to and from Times Square. Price wise, the hotels are cheaper in Newark (obviously), but we're also very limited in what hotels we can stay at because we're all under 21. Currently we have only found the Courtyard at EWR and The Howard Johnson. The HJ is much cheaper, but the reviews scare me a bit. I also don't where/how much it would cost to park my car in the city. Any advice is welcome. Great thanks!

tl;dr NYC road trip, where to stay, where to park car, under 21

We did a road trip there last month. When we were touring Manhattan, we stayed in Jersey City. We were camping, but we saw lots of hotels around there. Then it's a 15 min train to Times Square.

How did camping go? And what camp ground did you stay at?

if you're staying real close to EWR, then you can take the commuter rail train from there to NYC. or you could stay at a hotel in Secaucus, NJ. find one with a good bus connection to NYC. or you could stay whereever in NJ, and then drive to the Harrison, NJ, PATH station, park your car in the big parking garage there ($11/12 hours), and take the PATH train into NYC. or you could find an inexpensive hotel in Flushing, Queens and take the 7 subway train into Manhattan. or you could stay at a hotel in Jersey City and take the PATH train into NYC. I don't know of any cheap hotels in Jersey City, but maybe there are some. Secaucus+bus or Jersey City+PATH is the least pain in terms of commuting into NYC, but the other options aren't terrible.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking in Jersey city, but finding a hotel you can rent when you're under 21 is difficult

Thought about camping there? The place I was at allowed tent camping. Liberty Harbor RV park. I didn't feel unsafe there at all. We actually had a view of the Statue of Liberty from our campsite.

It was great (see above). $85/night - offseason omfg, but it was walking distance to everything including the subway. Did the quintessential New York Pizza and on Mother's day, let my sweetie sleep in and I walked to town and got incredible New York Bagels for our breakie in sight of the Statue of Liberty.

Security there was tight, although you wouldn't want to leave valuables around. Didn't feel sketchy at all.
