not exactly sure if this is...

not exactly sure if this is /trv/ related, but not sure where else to post this and wanted to see if people feel the same way....

for those of you who have lived in a "trendy" city (read: austin, portland, seattle, nyc, etc.) all your life, do you get pissed off at all the out of towners that move in?

i'm so enraged at how many people are moving to the city i've lived in and loved. now traffic is at its all time worst, it's nearly impossible to get anywhere by car. and a lot of the new people who come here are just not that friendly or try really hard to be hipsters or scrub punks or w/e they're called. cost of living is going up because now everyone wants to move here.

anyone else feel the same way?
Anonymous 06/04/14(Wed)07:45 UTC+1 No.857271 Report

Yes and no. Rich Chinese overseas scum buying apartments as investments and leaving them empty, yes. Europeans or Americans who fit in culturally and contribute to the overall atmosphere of my city, not at all.

i've been living in sf for about 10 years now, and though i'm now part of a supposed tech bourgeois, i wasn't always. so i'm both a newcomer and an oldtimer in a way. it's hard to break people down so neatly. there are a lot of dumbass 23 year olds whose income is vastly out of proportion with their humility, and although they're hardly the majority of newcomers to the city, they're fucking obnoxious. their disdain for how things are would be acceptable if they were at all invested in making the city a better place, but they're not--this is but a stop for them, thankfully.

on the flip side, i've met a bunch of people from all over the place who are nice and interested in participating in a community that consists of more than some yc-wannabee brunchathon bullshit. people who'll give you a ride to the airport every once in awhie, no big deal, and you'll watch their cat when they're out of town. when weekend plans come you aren't trying to one up each other with some fly-by-night bottle service club, but instead exploring a hiking trail or going for a run.

so long as you're giving back to the community, you're fine.
what pisses me off is people moving here and just being assholes, or always bragging on facebook "lol so lucky to live here!!"

This is a very hipster as fuck statement to make. But after some thought it makes a lot of sense to me why you would be angry. I'm not sure which city you are refering to but I visited portland last year and I got a really good vibe from the people there and was almost convince by my then girlfriend to move there. Best city in america in my opinion. But I noticed that the job market is poor and the citizens of portland might want to keep their awesome cities benefits a secret if they wish to keep their jobs and their way of life going. With an influx of random transplants comes an influx of annoying bullshit problems which might turn your city into a shithole with more negs then positives. Like you mentioned, the transportation and cost of living go up. I'm from vancouver b.c and I'm a transplant to this city, but I've been here long enough(5 years) to see my fair share of "Attempted dwellers" come in and try and soak up the lifestyle. Luckily vancouver has a lot more markets to branch out then portland does. The traffic and cost of living have been shit for decades so that will never change. The only fear is the chinese taking over. They already conquered richmond, but they sacrificed chinatown to the crackheads in the process. so maybe it won't cpmpletely happen after all.

What I'm trying to say is. Get lots of homeless people to even out the hipsters and yuppie population. make sure you always have a few grimey spots on the map cough surrey, cough lower east side, cough smelly ass chilliwack.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)09:14 UTC+1 No.858035 Report

yeah, i realize it comes off as "STOP LIKING THINGS I LIKE!" but it's much more than that.

the homeless here in seattle are already a crazy amount :(
5 years seems like a good amount of time to fully adjust. it seems like you moved to portland before it was labelled a huge hipster trend city and i'm doubting that was your original reason for moving there.
i don't care about people moving here to different cities in general, but when we're overpopulated, it becomes really fucking annoying. even more so annoying when these people have no care in the world for strangers or just throw litter on the beach because that's what they did where they come from or whatever.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)10:27 UTC+1 No.858043 Report

What pisses me off are all of the fucktards who think
>oh, we're a trendy city!
>we should vote for more public transportation!
>we should vote to increase school funding!
>we should vote for new baseball stadiums!
>let's build a monorail!
>let's lobby for a gondola system!!!
>oh fuck, my taxes have gone up to the point I can't afford them!
>I'm going to demand a $15 MINIMUM WAGE!!!
>I'm going to demand a HOUSING SUBSIDY PROGRAM!!!!!!

Fuck you, fuck your mother for not aborting you, fuck your father for not getting his defective balls lopped off before he reproduced. The reason taxes have quadrupled since you moved in is because YOU VOTED FOR ALL THAT STUPID SHIT.

>against public transpo
>against good schools
>against fair pay for the working

You're why America is an utter shithole while Scandinavia glows with progress
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)11:50 UTC+1 No.858058 Report

Why bring your stupid opinion into an unrelated thread?
Anyway, medium to large businesses rarely pay their fair share of tax, so it's fair to demand that they do, especially as regular people end up subsiding the rich as they can't afford expensive accountants and lawyers.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)12:48 UTC+1 No.858067 Report

I'm not him, but you're fucking uneducated as shit, and clearly one of those idiots who thinks the $15 minimum wage is justified because "da 1% takin all da monies"

Get this fag lord, roughly 85% of businesses in America are small businesses (inc partnerships). All the min wage hike is going to do is kill off a majority of small businesses and give more revenues to the corporations, the exact opposite of what you want
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)13:02 UTC+1 No.858068 Report

The increase in minimum wage wouldn't kill small business if the big companies paid their fair share of taxes.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)16:20 UTC+1 No.858088 Report

I'm not "against public transpo". I'm on it right now as I'm typing this.

There's a difference between being "against public transpo" and being against fucking retarded proposals that will never work. Like Austin's proposed "aerial gondolas", or Seattle's proposed really big monorail system.

I'm not "against good schools", I am against fucking retarded proposals to increase school taxes with absolutely no guidance on how they will be spent to actually improve the schools. Which is what every single proposal does -- "oh, let's increase teacher pay! so what if we've already got some of the highest-paid teachers in the U.S., we need to raise their salaries EVEN MORE to keep them!!!" (Bellevue, WA).

And I'm not "against fair pay for the working". Fair pay is whatever the employee can negotiate against the value of the employee's labor. Flipping burgers? Who gives a fuck about burger flippers, go get a real job, kids. Then you can negotiate your pay.

>Scandinavia glows with progress

Really? The way I hear it, everyone is depressed as fuck, the government taxes alcohol to death in order to prevent you all from drinking yourselves into oblivion every night, and it costs $35 to get a fucking pizza from Domino's.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)16:22 UTC+1 No.858089 Report

The big companies already pay a disproportionately high share of taxes. The exceptions are models of "progress" like Apple, where they hide their money in offshore schemes. Hope you enjoy your iPhone, hipsterfaggot.

The description is kind of true except that the still rising high prices of alcohol don't really stop the towns from turning into pukefests every Friday, and pizza isn't really that expensive, it's relatively cheap.
The depression part is partly national, ongoing for the last few hundred years, and partly only in your eyes.
Do you think untaxing alcohol would make things better, i.e. more progressive? Also, is cheap pizza your idea of progress?

For a country to be progressive people living there must be happy and there must be cheap pizza and booze available, is that what you're saying?
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)17:23 UTC+1 No.858100 Report

Completely this.

Born and raised in NYC (though I've since moved), transplants annoy me, but I can't say I really care since NYC is so fucking giant. But I do think you have to be a certain type of insane to want to live in NYC; it smells like shit, it's disgustingly ugly (aside from some skyscrapers and a few enclaves), and it is absurdly expensive. But, people romanticize every big city (see: SF, Paris, Tokyo), so I dunno if I hate transplants for that, though I do judge them..

But wat I do really hate is their smugness, and how they think they know what's best for this city that they know NOTHING about except some made-up Hollywood crap. NYC has a school system that doesn't even teach black people how to fucking read a book, but these transplants are the one who are protesting when people saying the word 'nigger' or whatever. You can't walk a block in NYC without hearing a black person say nigger, so I don't see why this is now an issue. Focus on the real racial problems: inequality.

Anyway, the transplants who have a job and live in a tiny shitty apartment aren't really the ones that get on my nerves. It's more the hipster 20 year olds whose rich parents pay for their shitty apartment who do. They just sit on the side of the road in fucking Bushwick playing a ukelele or some bullshit and then go bar hopping at night. In my opinion, that requires a certain type of mental illness. Don't get me wrong, I love cities. That's not why I judge people who move to NYC so hard. It's just that if you've ever been to NYC, you'll know how much it smells, how expensive it is, how much the city will walk right over you, etc. I'm glad I grew up in NYC, it shaped me into who I am, but I don't envision my future being anywhere in the 100 mile radius of that shithole, and I laugh at those who do.

Also, pic related. View from a $3k/mth apartment.
Anonymous 06/06/14(Fri)21:31 UTC+1 No.858160 Report

3k a month? damn dude
i'm pretty sure transplants (had no idea that's what they were called until now) just want something to brag about when they move, or want to move out to places like this to start their "music career."
others see people from seattle as dumbasses because of what has been going on lately (police behavior, minimum wage hike, etc) but i swear to god it has never been like this and is mostly because of the transplants trying to turn it into an "everything-friendly" city. now everyone is going to be like "hey lol seattle has weed and we get paid $15/hr! lets move there!!"
god i just want them all to leave
