The ship stats page lists the thrusters as 'XiTech' brand, so maybe they're extra manuverable/powerful for their size. You're gonna need it to keep the Freelancer under control, that's going to be one heavy ship when loaded up to the brim.

>pugachev's cobra in space
It makes a lot more sense than you think. Back when I was writing my own Star Citizen style physics game for fun, one amusing thing I noticed was that the fastest way to stop a ship was to pitch up so that you could use your reverse thrusters as well as your powerful downward thrusters at the same time to slow you down.

By the way, there's a button in game already called "space brake" which does literally the exact same thing as you saw in the trailer. It'll bring you to a stop as fast as possible and then when you let it go you'll resume flying at the speed you were flying before.

Agreed, but CR has said numerous times that they want to provide a wide variety of game styles for players who know what they want and just want to jump in.

So you have to balance the extremes. The trust-fund babbies who just want to be a merchant or scout, versus the people who walk in at the ground level with an Aurora they customize to suit their preferred playstyle as they work towards a combat, exploration, or cargo ship.

I still think the LN is kind of a bad fucking idea though, since it really puts the weaker combat model on the back-foot.

But I can't help but think to myself that this is a bad idea since it'll be blowing hot air onto my graphics card. Or can you pick and choose the direction the fan points with these things?

Everyone abandons this sinking ship and goes to ED. That's why /edg/ is dead, and that's why /scg/ will suffer the same fate within two weeks.

XR sure didn't do the franchise any favors, but X3g (later Xg to get any survivors from XRg) was very hype for litcube's universe - just not the sort of hype that lets /scg/ exist when there is literally nothing to talk about. The lack of waifus to use to ward off 404s and the effort required in producing AARs certainly didn't help.

Just a little aggravated. I was sincerely interested, but just me mentioning how NMS was cheaper for much of the same and all of a sudden I don't understand development or for some reason the fact that they have beta makes their game better.

What a bunch of defensive fucks. I guess paying $150 will do that to you. I only paid $35 for SC so I don't feel the need to try so hard to defend it.

Ignoring this autism for a bit

The main issue I had was that they were charging $100 for all of their features (150 for beta) despite NMS doing very similar for $60 on top of already demonstrating their shit.

I mean for fuck sake, WHY IS IT AN EXPANSION JUST TO WALK AROUND YOUR SHIP?

Is it really that hard to implement something SC did nearly a year ago, that you have to charge extra for it?

Braden is a jew wannabe. He thinks he can jew people for a lot of money, but Jewish Space Industries knows you got to get them in the door before you jew them in the ass.

I want a good space game too, but I'm not going to hand over my money to E:D until the show off all of their features.

It's not like anyone is forcing anyone to pledge. The part I find sad is that there are people who pledge what they can't afford. You invest in something because you see a potential but you got to be prepared for that it could turn out poorly.

But about ED. If the ED guys can fund their project with their package prices then it's hard to say that they're doing it wrong.

At the end of the day both ED, NMS and SC will be judged by their final product. The downside to crowd funding is that if they fuck up then it will not be forgotten for a long time, unlike a publisher just quietly shutting down a project.

>WHY IS IT AN EXPANSION JUST TO WALK AROUND YOUR SHIP
This is not a trivial thing. Not doing it well, anyway. There is a ridiculous amount of work that would have to go into adding walking around in a spaceship game that would add next to nothing. It's just not worth the effort unless your game is designed around it. Why do you think this has so rarely even been attempted? The devs weigh the time it would take to add that feature against the benefit it would have on the game and it almost never works out to the feature's benefit.

>Is it really that hard to implement something SC did nearly a year ago, that you have to charge extra for it?
Yes it is actually. Star Citizen can do it easily because CryEngine is a first person shooter engine. That's also the same reason it's struggling so much with the space portion, because it's doing something it was never designed to do. Elite Dangerous has the opposite problem, but I suspect their problem is more content related which is why I specifically say "to do it well." Doing it well requires a fuck-ton of content and asset creation for a trivially small portion of your typical space sim.

So why can No Man's Sky do it? (And I honestly won't believe shit about that game until I see real gameplay and not a scripted in-engine trailer.) They can do it because their game is designed around that feature. They built their whole engine around the idea that you would spend roughly equal time on ground and in a fighter in space. They get around the asset creation part by procedurally generating most of the on-land content and not having any walkable stations or large ships where it would be difficult to procedurally generate that kind of content.

TL;DR: NMS is designed around those features and making them easy to fill out at the cost of unique and hand-crafted anything. Elite meanwhile was designed as a space sim first and has no real need for a walking feature other than to say it has one.

Let me put it another way. You want to know happens when you tack on the fabled walking in stations/ships feature to a space sim?

You get X-Rebirth. That feature is one of the (admittedly many) things that killed it because it drew developer focus away from so many of the core game's problems and tried to replace them with a shallow mechanic and experience whose novelty wears off after 15 minutes.

I mean sure, it doesn't help that Egosoft has proven to be utterly incompetent for the past decade, but it's a good example of why it's so hard to pull off. The game became undeniably worse with the addition of walking because it was a very naiive implementation that read like the average forum goer's "idea guy" post.

Yeah, walking shouldn't be added to a space game unless it actually enhances the gameplay.

In NMS, SC, and ED's case, it should if we get what they're promising they'll add (FPS portions, EVA, etc).

My main concern with movement in SC is that it ends up being janky feeling (lots of rubberbanding and whatnot if your connection to the server is bad, or even really bad situations like your crewmates dying to rubberbanding somehow).

But if SC does it correctly, it will make the game just that much more deep. Now pirating isn't just a menu where you ask the other guy to dump his cargo, or kill him and it magically pops out. You can take his ship, and get out and steal his cargo, or have a zero g firefight, or land on a space station, get out, enter the station, fight inside, run outside, fight out there in zero g, get in your ship and chase people, etc, all seamlessly.

Not to mention the other immersive (muh immurshion) elements like getting mugged on the ground and having to fight them off, or getting into bar fights or something.

That's precisely why I keep emphasizing "doing it well."

Elite's engine is technically not of space sim origins. It's the same engine they used for fucking Zoo Tycoon of all things. I don't doubt their capability to support first person gameplay, but to take the time to create the content and assets, not to mention designing gameplay that makes it worth your while is a whole other issue. It's just not a priority and it doesn't really matter in the long run other than to have to a cool feature bullet point on your box.

Many people here are on the same page. LTI is a small convenience, but if a ship sale does not include LTI, then there's no incentive in buying those ships. Especially since we can just acquire them with virtual currency in the PU.

It's why a lot of anons believe that if Roberts gives the greenlight for another massive sale, he'll throw in LTI to generate more $$$. He could easily give it a positive spin and the faggots on RSI would eat it up

>Like in real-life insurance should be a relatively small part of your regular in game expenses which will also include paying landing fees, trade tariffs (if in a system with lots of infrastructure and law and order), fuel (if you don’t collect it yourself from a gas giant), buying cargo to trade, hiring help, making upgrades to your ship or even buying a whole new ship.

>Some of the additional policies like upgrade or cargo insurance will be rated based on risk levels. Risk level 1 being the safest systems and risk level 5 being the most dangerous system that is insurable for cargo or upgrades. Any risk level over 5 is un-insurable. A risk 3 policy for cargo will cover you for all cargo losses in a risk 3 system or below. The higher the risk level of the policy the more it will cost. As with the base insurance this will not be crippling financially but instead be a reasonable running cost that relates to the risk / reward profile of the systems flown.

Now and again, but for the most part, right now, no. You have very little customization, the ship controls are stiff iffy, and we can only use 3 ships and no variants. Many UI elements don't work very well quite yet (such as transferring power), and there's a lot yet to be implemented.

Not really. The biggest thing holding it back is how shitty it feels to control due to the IFCS trying to compensate for ships designed by artists acting with real physics. After that it's biggest problem would be how shitty the weapons feel. The annoyingly low velocity and weak sounds are really boring. The damage model itself is pretty damn cool, but weapons have no real impact to them other than making parts on the enemy ship disintegrate into damage states.

I love seeing this thing in motion. It looks a bit odd in the art, but in motion it makes perfect sense. Its a totally alien ship yet it seems very natural for what it is.

It's like they figured out how a proper spaceship would be designed and then decided to design human ships with stupid restriction for retarded reasons.

How the fuck are they going to balance the Xi'an scout with that smooth movement against an UEE ship?

If they don't give it a practical disadvantage then 1 year in all players will be using Xi'an ships if the rest are similar. The combat advantage is just too big for when it comes to leading on a moving target that require a lot of small movement corrections.

I really hope they speed up the other ships.
100m/s is 250m/h, that's slow as fuck.

The slowest ship should be at least 2000m/h. That would make turns way wider, and would get rid of turrets in space without having to change anything else.

You would have to speed up the projectile speed by like 10x though.
Maybe only triple missile speed, that way you could avoid it without using CM's.

I think the reason everything is going so slow right now is because the arenas are so small that upping the speed like that would make going from one end to the other take like 10 seconds.

I think they could put a lot more effort in making a smaller arena look good in screenshots to sell more shit, so they did that.
Now that we have the game I hope they come up with better maps for us to use.

In the PU there won't be a space restriction problem.

You know at close distances you can see exactly what the other ship's vector is? When they start turning, you just need to keep facing their back. It'll be incredibly easy in a ship where translational movement is just as fast as forward movement.

You know, I think one of the things that bothers me the most about all this is that it seems like they chose an engine that's not very well suited to the task. I mean, fuck. Look at War Thunder.

Massive open air environments, complex flight models, advanced damage models, support for high speeds (1000km/h+), and supports for large 30+ player interaction. Not to mention it's one of the most resource efficient engines I've seen, and the netcode is fucking magic. It's gorgeous at that.

Instead they are hobbling along with this gimped piece of shit cryengine that has never done anything but produce pretty screenshots and be unoptimized as holy fuck. My system struggles on low settings and I'm running 16gb of RAM with an i7 4700 and 2x GT755 in SLI.

Honestly, I can't see the Xian losing a battle without some seriously non-Newtonian bullshit going on. I figure they'll cap the max engine speeds to make it slower than every other dogfighter in a straight line, so you can't actually catch up to someone and become a rotating ball of death before they turn on decoupled mode while still going at sanic speeds, flip around, and blow your slow ass out of the sky.

Which means they're just a hard counter to "turret in space" babies, who will whine for years on the forums until the Xian is nerfed into having no guns.

Wanting to have all inputs have the same control's, and not special modes to buff or nerf doesn't have any correlation to being a furry.

It is. The reason the arenas are so small as it is, is because at the scale of Star Citizen ships (1:1) and the speeds that they fly at, you can start flying into floating point error territory very quickly even at our relatively slow speeds. No. Because somebody prefer something other than what you prefer. This game isn't about limiting performance through hardware, but ingame mechanics. People should be free to use whatever input device the prefer because it's not like it can be prevented in the long run anyway.

Or we can figure out whatever control set-up you prefer for your favorite input device and argue that we should use another system, because reasons.

Finally played a few multiplayer matches. It's not particularly good. Or fun.

One, the controls continue to completely kill this game for me. Two, there is no balance whatsoever so the Hornet with the Omnisky guns from the 300i is objectively the best ship and setup. It can kill ships in only a few shots while taking significantly more damage than any other ships in the game.

Also for some reason the chainguns overheat incredibly fast and self-destruct in multiplayer. I don't recall that ever happening in singleplayer.

I got a few kills myself but it's just so boring. The game has a long way to go.

Until the pre-alpha is over they're not going to balance shit, it's always going to suck. All they're doing is checking for bugs and see if it's all working from a structural point of view. While it is understandable, it also doesn't give us much reason to actually play for more than a few hours.

Considering most people knew the Xian ship would be on sale today, the hefty majority also probably waited out just for it. So far, not as much as the freelancer.

I imagine it as a scout the same way the Scout works in TF2. Fast, annoying, made of tissue paper, and can fuck you up if you let them run circles around you. Occasionally, they actually use their speed for actual scouting and taking/destroying objectives.

Imagine a group of Khartus flying into some place, gang banging a single target while buzzing around, then getting the hell out.

Alternatively, imagine a Khartu flying into a certain area of space, buzzing around and finding out what ships are there, then fucking off and telling his fleet what's up, and then showing up with them when they agree they can take whatever the Khartu saw.

Well, it was a light military vessel, though I think it's a bit big for the "light" category. The M50 is light, the Gladius is light. The Khartu seems kinda beefy and I think has an armament comparable to the Hornet.

Then again, that shit is semantics and they called the Hornet a light fighter for a while too.

At this point, it seems to me that for all intents and purposes the Vanduul Scythe (despite being easy kills in the module), Cutlass, and Hornet are essentially heavy fighters; the M50, Gladius, and Merlin are light fighters; and the 300i, Aurora, and Avenger are medium fighters. You can't really call the Aurora "light" since it maneuvers like a brick but is kind of durable.

Not sure where the Mustang will fall, nor the Khartu-al either for that matter.

You seem extremely assblasted about something.

Let me help you out. Exploring and scouting are not the same things.

Neither the tracker hornet nor the xi'an explorer have been described as long range. They may be equipped with a long range scanners though but that's something else.

If you were smart you might have asked yourself the question if having a cargo option would be considered good for exploration. You would also have asked yourself if fuel consumption and extra fuel isn't more important for exploration than speed.

But you are just an obnoxious (likely fat) faggot who's more concerned about posting stupid pictures on 4chan for lack of theoretic in attempts of winning internet fights. I feel sorry for you.

$150 is a lot of money for that ship. I understand we can just acquire it once we're playing the game with ingame currencies. I also read that they are planning passes that will let us try out ships we don't have, once they become available in AC. What advantage do I get from paying all that money because the package doesn't seem to contain anything but the ship itself?

So the xi'an ship is a racer? It looks pretty fast. So I guess 4 tr3 is about the same as 2 tr4. Too bad the 350r will handle like shit at those speeds since its maneuvering thrusters are identical to the 300i.
