Post your current campaigns, curious characters and interesting battles. We'd love to see them.

>Is Rome 2 fixed yet?
Patches have added in seasons, wonders, unit mass, and battle speed reduction (defenses and shield bonuses increased).
It's better than at release. Many people still play it, many people still hate it. If you already have a copy of the game, you're better off booting it up and seeing for yourself.

You should play on VH/M, I think. That way you're still beset by the innumerable AI doomstacks, but on the battle map they don't have absurd combat buffs that render their peasants on par with your standard footmen, or their footmen on par with your elite warriors. I think the bonus it gets on VH is +7 to attack, defense, and morale, but I could be wrong.

In other news, Egypt grows larger, we've struck out against the marauding Galatians. The Galatians invaded all of our Hellenic allies on Anatolia, so we're gping to liberate them. The Sun King demands victory from his subjects.

It's pretty neat to fight a nation that rivals Egypt in size. Unfortunately their warriors keep losing soundly to my armies in the fortress because I am an underhanded Gypo

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake

You know, I pity you guys who like Rome 2. Beyond the graphics, campaign map, EVERYTHING. The game is about battles. How can battles be good in this engine without unit collision? Where units can only kill each other with kill moves? Where stats matter more that tactics? Where you can't throw javelins without charging? What sort of game is that?

Not even Total WAR, Total SHIT more like.

But the system is shit. The pop system was way better and even then you couldn't build everything everywhere due to time/money constraints, so one had to make longterm plans and prioritise correctly.

>some cool features.
And I'll give you that. Empire was buggy but got better. Napoleon was solid but small. Shogun 2 grew on me. And mods helped them all. But we have gotten stuck now with bugs on release and DLC.

Rome 2 was even worse. Buggy. DLC everywhere (you don't have to buy it but it shows you there business model when they are selling "unlocks" to you which are mostly in the game - remember when you had to defeat a nation on campaign to unlock it??)

But battles... urgh. People have mentioned unit collision several times. Multiple soldiers could engage the same soldier. Choke points were important. This engine can't really do that and has silly kill moves. Play Medieval 2 (or dinosaur shit as that anon called it). Play SS. Position your force and defeat a massive force despite them having better men than you. Feels great doesn't it? Because that should matter. The battle gameplay has become so problamatic.

I bought Rome 2. I played it. I wasn't impressed. Maybe down the line I will give it another change. But Total War fanbase need to do something. We need to stop pretending that the polished shit they have given us is anything but shit. They need to change. But you see the game.. or preorder bonuses.. or it cheap on Steam (or even jsut a few quid off) and buy it. Give them money. And continue supporting it.

You see, the Atrebartes have been long at war with the Iceni tribe. And after years of strife, the Iceni finally decided to make a decisive move.

The only thing I've gleamed thus far is that it doesn't share Darthmod's morale system where units rout often but never stay routed unless a unit is actively pursuing them.

Just getting into Total War for the first time, but all I've done so far is fuck around in sieges and custom battles in Medieval 2.

Some stuff is really bugging me (no indirect fire for artillery; if you aren't on high ground, gunpowder infantry seem useless), but I think I could get into it given time, especially once I get a campaign going.

However, I suck, which shouldn't be too surprising, given how I've never played a TW game before. I've been training against the Aztecs (no arti or cav to worry about), but I still get my ass handed to me. The only really successful, remotely even battle I've had was a Spain vs. Moors match on one of the river maps, where I set up a proper tercio formation (pikes in front to crush cav, sword-and-bucklers in the rear to rush forward once the infantry arrive, musketeers on the hills behind me), and killed all of the enemy while losing only a few of mine.

That was easy as hell to do, though, because the terrain couldn't have been more suited to what I did. And if the enemy had artillery or effective gunpowder infantry, I might've been fucked - just their trebuchets did a number on my pikemen before my own arti sniped them out.

So... how do I play Medieval 2? Can I win with some variant of the tercio (spear wall + sword support + ranged dps) is most/all battles? What general combat tips/detailed guides can you recommend?

How do Empire and Rome 1 compare to Medieval 2? They're the other TW games that I own.

Oh, and which faction is best for this sort of play?

Spain seems the obvious choice, but what about other nations? How much better are musketeers than arquebusiers, and can I use the latter as a suitable late-game stand-in for musketeers?

What are the best spear-wall-forming troops besides tercio pikemen? Are stats that important for them, or is the ability to form a wall enough, i.e. can I make do with just pike militia?

How can I use gunpowder infantry without high ground? The only other solution seems to be putting them in front, then pulling them back after they fire, but that means I get 1, maybe 2 volleys off at most, have a good chance of my men dying, and have to micro all of my gunpowder units. Is it better just to use archers or crossbowmen unless I can get the high ground?

What about effective use of artillery? In that tercio battle, I had 4 culverins and a basilisk, and they scored negligible casualties - the most use they had was counter-sniping the enemy trebuchets. It seems that normally, however, the requirement to directly target an enemy unit fucks with their AI, and they end up doing far less than their cost justifies.

Sorry, last one:

What's the purpose of the schiltron? It just seems like an area-inefficient spear wall, or something to use if your spearmen are trapped out in the open - and why would that ever happen?

And how useful are the Timurids' elephants? They seem mostly useful as a mobile artillery platform (and with 5-6 guns per team, that's a lot), but how useful are they in melee, and breaking enemy formations?

>>70453181

I may have just been stupid - I'd form a wall of melee infantry, and put a shitton of archers behind it, with 1-2 artillery pieces, and 1-2 cav regiments in the wings waiting to charge.

The artillery would be totally useless because it can't fire over your men's heads, the archers wouldn't be nearly as deadly as I'd hoped, and the infantry would simply get overwhelmed by their sheer numbers - after which, a few Aztecs would break through and fuck up my archers. The cav would be totally fucking useless because units seem incapable of charging properly, or of getting out after hitting the enemy the first time.

I also lost a battle against the Ottomans as... the Byzantines, I think? There were similar problems there, except I was getting fucked by cavalry as well.

this is what you do, you separate your siege units from your army, have the army advance forward and keep some crappy reserve forces taking care of the siege engines, your main army goes and besieges the city that you want to take for a couple of turns (causing them attrition) until your siege engines get there and you can assault the castle/city more easily.

Thanks. I personally don't care much for cavalry in any game, and I like to make do without too many of them.

I'm thinking that one of the Italian states is best for what I want to do, I just can't decide between Venice, Milan, and the Pope.

Venice has the unique heavy infantry, but they don't seem much better than the dismounted knights - 4-5 more attack, but 6 less defense.

What are the comparative advantages of crossbowmen vs. archers? Milan has the crossbowmen with 14 attack, but Venice has archers with 9 attack, the ability to use flaming arrows (I dunno how effective the morale damage of those is), and better hand attack.

The Pope, on the other hand, has Swiss Guards, who seem to be the best spear wall unit in the game... but they cost an insane amount of florins, and they'd be totally impractical as the basic line unit. Plus, I don't know how important those stats really are for units that are basically just a wall of pointy sticks.

This is my last noob post, I swear. Thanks a ton to those of you trying to help.

I left a small gap between two of my regiments and started running a column of grenadiers through so I could watch their grenades explode (I just researched the grenade damage upgrade). I couldn't even get them in range to throw cause the enemy line ran away.

How different would you guys say were Carthage and Rome? Generally speaking, the image I get from the romans are hardworking people, eager to sacrifice themselves for the good of the City, with discipline and courage; the carthaginians, however, seem to be depicted more like a bunch of greedy merchants, devoid of civical duty and fueled only by greed and sheckels, for example in that historical novel by Flaubert, "Salammbô". My question is, how much of that is true, and how much is just roman-made history? I really like Carthage and generally roleplay them as being as 'patriotic' as the romans

The romans were pretty brainwashed and proud. The rich would spend their whole lives trying to be as great as possible so that they could have their name written on a wall or something. Honestly the romans got super lucky. They almost got destroyed so many times, surviving by a cunt's hair, but it made them strong.

The carthaginians were just regular people who happened to get powerful because they were in a prime location for trade and naval influence. Their military was tied up with red tape and bureaucracy. They crucified generals that failed so no one took any risks or pressed any advantages. Even when Hannibal funded is own war and was kicking rome's ass, back home the carthaginean government tried to stay out of it because they were scared about retribution.

So yeah. Rome is the result of risk taking and luck, and carthage is what happens when your city is run by grass eaters.

You're overthinking or just being autistic.
Medieval 2 isn't some hardcore medieval sim. It's just a simple TBS with pretty RT battles. That's it. Unit values are useless since you can already figure out that knights are better than common spearman. The difference between factions is quite limited with a unique unit or two. There is really no reason to think about every unit's abilities unless you are playing some hardcore mod made for autists (Like EB for Rome). Just play the game and enjoy pretty battles. (Play on N/N. Hard, Very Hard adds some annoying bonuses to the AI which can quite ruin it for a beginner) When you get the hang of the basic mechanics, make sure to download all those awesome mods at TWC. M2TW has the best mods, imo. When EB2 gets released, and if it's good, I'm not gonna exit my house for a few months.

My biggest gripe with Medieval 2 is how broken cavalry movements are.

It's impossible to flank the enemy force if half of the cavalry in a unit just stand there while the others race away at full speed

Cavalry are shock troops, and should be used to decisively break enemy melee units or to clear enemy archers. If your faction has them, one or two units of super cheap light cavalry are useful for killing routed units so they don't rejoin the battle or retreat on the campaign map.
Footmen are peasants and should be used to hold lines for your cavalry. Numbers are generally more important than quality for them.
Archers are really only good against a stationary enemy army or against horse archers. If you already have a much stronger army than your opponents, archers are pretty good at pressing that advantage allowing you to destroy the enemy without taking losses.

Play style can also change depending on your faction. For example ottomans can just mass archers since they have really good melee stats, and the danes can use elite infantry to shock and route as if they were cavalry. Just remember to always focus on routing the enemy army, if you try to fight a pitched battle you'll take twice as many losses for the same victory. The ai is pretty dumb and will usually let you wrap your forces around them.

I think there's some magnet physics shit going on there. I've noticed that when units charge the battle music can start playing even though it's only supposed to play when actual combat begins i.e. two units start fighting each other.

My theory is that when a unit gets within a certain range of a cavalry unit, not necessarilly close enough to engage in melee but close enough to be counter as being in battle, the game treats some of the units in the cavalry as if they're in battle and they run as if they're trying to get out of a mob rather than if they have a clear path to run in.

Just a thought though I could be full of shit

I don't remember where I saw it, but I remember looking at a battle of total war being played with all of the units being represented as cylinders and other shapes.

Pretty sure when that unit geometry meets another, the music starts.

Maybe with the cavalry, that unit geometry is colliding or getting intertwined or something. I don't know. Just makes me wish Medieval 3 happens with little to no hitch.

romans were basically white niggers, being too fucking greedy and stupid to manage trade correctly (they taxed the shit out of it) always thinking short term and because of that fucking themselves over in the long run, their whole governmental structure was fucking retarded as it was basically an oligarchy disguised as a republic, (very similar to what the us and most of the world has now) and while it might have worked for a city state it just was not up to the job of managing a whole empire, every time they had an economic recession they solved it by going to war with someone, pillaging and enslaving them to give their economy a temporary boost, they ruled with an iron fist and they bled their subjects dry, this is how stupid they were, tax collectors were private groups who had to get what the government required and whatever else they could get out of the people was theirs to keep, see how this is a really bad idea? well if they also did they didn't give a fuck because if anyone did something about it they'd be crushed ruthlessly, the only thing romans crucified for was crimes against the state, you raped and kill some woman? you'd probably be thrown in the coliseum, but you rose up and fought the government's tyranny? oh shit nigger now you fucked up, you'll get your ass crucified and slowly agonise for hours or even days before succumbing to death.
they won was not because they were virtuous and right in their reasons for war, but because were stubborn in their ways and would fight until they were ruined and then they'd keep fighting still.
if you think that's a good attribute then look at the Japanese, they would have gotten bombed to hell if their emperor hadn't surrendered.
fuck romans and fuck Greeks too.

I mean, he kind of has a point, despite being retarded (I think, from my relatively limited understanding of Roman history).

AFAIK Rome was too short-term thinking with their taxation policy, and they did depend on conquest as economic stimulus to too great of a degree.

The empire did a lot right, but a more stable economy and administration would have gone a long way toward postponing/preventing the fall of the empire in the west.

And even if I'm completely wrong, someone with more knowledge will feel the need to correct me, and I'll learn something.

>mfw the ungodly faction variety making retarded turn times and load times

I get a sense that just doing 20-30 factions maximum and just a shit ton of rebels like in rome, medieval etc would work better than the current system of "every territory must be owned by the tribe/faction that lived there in the past".

rome 2 has fellen into the same problem I had back when Empire came out with turn timers being too fucking long within 50 turns.

is there any good reason to have such a fuck huge amount of faction variety when knowingly many good machines get fucking shrekt trying to do all those AI moves?
>>
Anonymous 06/11/14(Wed)00:50 UTC+1 No.70476872 Report

>>70476571
But fighting rebels is lame. I mean, it's basically a race to get as many territories before others do. Extended cultures somewhat solved this by creating factions to represent minor entities, like small kingdoms (Eastern Kingdoms faction) and small greek states (independent city states faction); The good thing is, they respond better than rebels when attacked. Bad thing is, if you attack one small city state or kingdom, you're at war against all of them. I haven't played rome2, but never had any issues with the bid number of factions in either ETW or shogun 2. And my computer sucks.

Go to Steam->Settings->Downloads->Steam Library Folders

Okay guys, this is my Louisiana playthrough with DarthMod for E:TW.

In the last 15 turns I have successfully invaded Europe after the Dutch decided to declare war on me and destroy my American trading empire. I have now conquererd all Dutch lands on Europe, including Paris, which was under their control.

My father/mother country has now been humbled by me. Feels weird mang.

I have so much money from my trade (almost)monopoly on the americas that the Maratha Confederacy SOLD me one of their cities, which put me on a collision course with the Mughal Empire, that now proceeded to declare war on me and is kicking my ass with their assloads of troops in a far away theater.

I'm having a LOT of trouble in Europe because of my lack of technology, their drills and troops are really superior to mine, I'm mostly relying on numbers and heavy cavalry over my lacking infantry.

This H/H on DarthMod.

Any tips?

Alright, so I've been blockaded by the Imagawa, the bastards. I've only played Rome; so I don't know how navies work in Shogun 2. I've got two questions.

1. If I take the last remaining city of the Imagawa, will their clan be destroyed, and their navies retreat; or will they survive and continue blockading my ports?

2. For future reference, what are good ships for building a defensive navy? The medium bune looks pretty tough; but is it overkill?

never played Shogun 2, but usually armies and navies of defeated factions either stop existing or turn into pirates/rebels.

In E:TW they simply cease to exist, and it uses the same engine as S2.
>>
Anonymous 06/11/14(Wed)05:23 UTC+1 No.70497748 Report

1) Yes

2) Just go for the Bune for now. Navies have stupid cheap upkeeps. Later though go for Nanban Trade ships. You get them through upgrading your Trading Port to a Nanban Quarter or someshit.

If you really want overkill, get a fuckton of Bune's and boarding ships and go capture the Black Ship.

Nah, navy battles are pretty simple. Just mass Bunes, or the boarding ships if you want to capture. They're called sengoku somethings.

But once you get a Nanban you can solo an entire fleet of Bune's while just backpeddling away and 360noscoping everyone on your flanks with cannon balls.

But you're playing, Oda, son, you shouldn't even be worried about a navy.

Just focus on upgrading your spear and morale tree and fucking swarm EVERYONE with Ashigaru.

Keep in mind that Bow Kobaya are the only ships that can fire flaming arrows if you have the right technology, though, which can really fuck up even an otherwise superior vessel. It's not really an option; there are so many enemy units that they come at me from all directions. Using the yari wall formation would just put my flanks at risk.

>Shit should be easy mode if you use the terrain to your advantage such as fighting in woods to negate his cav power.

:(
I deployed on top of a really steep hill, and he still fucking destroys me, every time. It's always going perfectly well— I'm even winning— right up until one of my flank units starts routing. Then it's a chain reaction, and everyone gets slaughtered.

How?

I deploy on top of a really steep hill, covered in trees; then, as they come at me from all angles, I spread out to meet them on the slopes. (If I stay stationary, they just flank me.) The battle goes on stagnantly for about two or three minutes like this; then, eventually, one of my flank units inevitably routs; and a chain reaction occurs, until my entire army is annihilated. (Also, my general's rally and inspire abilities don't actually appear to do jack-shit.)

Git gud, scrub. It's about maneuvering. Protect your archers, have them all target the same unit at a distance. Skirmish with your archers, keep a unit of ashi nearby. Lure their cav to your archers, hit them with spear. Yari wall at the precise moment. Butcher their archers and their samurai with your archers. Yari wall, yari wall, yari wall. If your yari fails to cover a flank, intercept with your cheap cav. Route their infantry, finish off their cav with your ashi.

What do you guys think the odds are that the Takeda will *ever* accept an armistice? I was kind of hoping I could just take this one province from them without making an eternal enemy.

well I played pretty much all total war games and I never got into crusader kings 2 because the UI was just too fucking awful to me and the premise of the game wasn't appealing enough to me to sit down and actually learn the game. a lot of GSGs (inb4 "lol TW games aren't GSG") suffer from shitty interface and bad tutorials/documentation.

it took me for fucking ever to realize you could transfer population in rome 1 because it literally says nowhere you can actually do it.

while playing ETW I often wondered about the agents too. like I get their concept but I don't think they're completely covered in tutorials or documentation and the mouse-over tooltips aren't that helpful either.

Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes.

Are there any youtube people who are good at the line infantry/warscape total war games?

I'm really in the mood to play Napoleon but I don't know how.

Also is anyone's captcha fucking up and only displaying one image?

If you like EB, yes. If you played other mods, probably not.

On a side note, Napoopan Collection is on sale for 75% off on Gamersgate.

I bought Empire mostly for the naval battles but haven't even finished the tutorial yet.

Should I put down 7.50 for napoopan plus all dlc on it?

Napoopan has similar naval battles, with more shine. Also easier access to big boats in campaigns

I was excited for it because I loved Sid Meiers Gettysburg and Antitiem.

You want a hard strategy game. Put that mother fucker on Gettysburg Day 2 or Antitiem full battle and try to keep up.

Good, I already fell in love with the naval battles in Empire. But the land campaign was dragging and unengaging.

>Also easier access to big boats in campaigns
