Code::Blocks

VS a shit.

Just make sure to download the corresponding libraries for your compiler.

And before you come bitching on here.

If you follow the tutorial exactly you're going to have a dynamic library. Which means you're going to have to copy the .dlls to your output directory.

>b-but I don't want to do that

Then at the expense of slightly raised file sizes.

Add -s-d to the end of your debug libraries.
And -s at the end of your release.

That pose works as well, but it sort of looks like she's in the middle of asking a question. A shopkeeper should have a relaxed pose since the player will probably be there for a while browsing through items.

Could work if you're doing multiple poses though.

VS is free you dumb shits.
The ultimate version has all the extra bloat for huge code monkey teams.
And what bloat are you talking about?
Just uncheck all that mysql and C# and F# and silverlight shit in the installer.
It's a damn good IDE for development with great tools and optional extensions.

In fact here look. Have a VS 2013 Ultimate key
BWG7X-J98B3-W34RT-33B3R-JVYW9

You have no god damn excuse.

Codeblocks looks like some windows 2000 software anyways while VS is the de-facto standard of programming on windows.

Literally fucking spoon-feeding you.

If anything the express version has less bloat than any of the versions above it.
You're going to say some shit like "It's shit! 0/10! Doesn't count!" anyways.

It's free and it's the de-facto of game development.

You even rejected the use of vim. Which has the most minimal bloat for an IDE.

Tell us what your game is like then. The one you've made in codeblocks.

Show us a grand project that was made and manged in codeblocks. Most people use kDevelop anyways.

It is a free tool that millions of people have been using free of charge.
People here are even using it. Because it is free and feature.
There have been links posted to the free Visual Studio.
Classrooms around the world get their students to use it.

It is free. This is a simple fact. A very simple fact.

The link was posted, you can download it right now and start programming with it.

Even if the millions of people freely using VS weren't mentioned the simple fact remains that the tool is free.
Why are you unable to understand this.

Here is one of the links again.
http://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs#d-express-windows-desktop

It is free.

I think It's like a coding shortcut? You make a name for a fucnction, and then put the code inside. When ever you want to run the code, you just drop the function name. Is that right?

/agdg/, i don't know much about the unity engine and i have come to you with a question

Hypothetically, if you wanted to (I obviously don't have anywhere near the skill to do this), would you be able to create your own lighting system entirely in unity? for example, Unity free doesn't have realtime shadows, but does unity give you something like full OpenGL access so you could program your own realtime shadows?

I usually do three or four frames because I am lazy as hell. I also try to always do 3/4 view for any 2d character, whether it's top down or sidescroller, because it's easy to flip it and recolor to get four directions of movement. So I really only have to draw four frames and do some minor edits to have a finished character.

I have perfected lazy art.

Add option before start of the game to name the protestants and what they are protesting for.

So you can beat up whatever you want and the creator doesn't get any hate for the game since it's user created.

Rough draft of the inventory screen in place, no functionality yet. I didn't make any of the UI art, it's public domain stuff I'm using as a placeholder. The blue bar at the bottom will be where you can see floor items.

The 5 slots on the character sheet are for equipment, the 6 slots to the right of it are your inventory. You can only carry 6 items.

It's the ugliest cheapest looking thing I have ever created. This is what it must feel like to make mobile games.

I want it to have realistic physics, yes.
So like, if you get hit when it's at the bottom, you get hit further, but if you get hit when it's at the top on the right or left, you don't get moved at all.

Either way, I have no idea why I can't accomplish this in Box2D. I tried a rope joint, which gave the behavior of a pendulum but the pendulum itself didn't rotate.

I'm trying a revolute joint but the behavior is weird as fuck

To be honest, pulling of that sort of minimalism using, what, 4 colors total, is pretty darn hard. All I could say is take a look at old game boy games and see how they do it. I'd just generally say keep the background pretty uncluttered since you can't very well differentiate it with a shift in hue/saturation/contrast.

Learning fag here
Finished up learning decision making, and just now jumping into loops. The drive is alive. I got so much motivations, I'm loving learning to code.

My learning strategy is to apply ANY AND ALL code i learn to something i make at the time of learning it. to get used to it and its concepts.

Question.
I used the && expression here, but is there an advantage of using the && expression over multiple if statements? I'm assuming I dont want to use multiple if statements due to the fact that it gets messy and terrible looking?

I'm having a hard time deciphering what is in the foregorund and what's in the back.
maybe the pure-black parts should be gray to show the interior of the "rock" and the background be black.

Personally I feel you're better off keeping the background a much brighter color.
I'd try to avoid absolute-colors like pure black or pure white.

Okay so you'll be able to set up your team before levels. There is no limit, you choose what you want (if you want only followers, you can).

Any ideas ?

>Follower
Follow and protect player, kill close rioters
>Engineer
Extinguishes fire, kick smokes, pepper spray ennemies
>Guardian
Always near protected area, often in defense mode, rush at protected area if intrusion
>Gunner
Using shotgun, kill front rioters, throw pepper spray grenades, flashbang grenades, no shield
>Sniper
Get on roof, kill random rioters (increase rioters rage)

if(score < 50){
if(score > highscore){
...
}
else{ //score above 50 and doesn't beat highscore

If a group of you were to get together, how would you all feel about a producer being on board on a project to simply help organise a group of devs, and to make sure everyone had input on design decisions.

Ok /agdg/ rate this game concept:

A simple 2D platformer aimed towards SJWs by trying to appeal to their most twisted world views financed via indiegogo and backed by the rage of a thousand twitter white knights officialy developed by a sjw woman but actually developed by you portraying the most straw men arguments you can find

And once it has reached enough popularity you reveal yourself - you deliver the game - free to play even - but you let them know they're full of shit by pointing out every single aspect that is wrong with the games themes also you keep the money, after all you delivered there would be a lot left

If you'd do it right, this would be such a fucking skandal you'd be instant famous, having all sorts of publicity for your next real game.

Oh boy. I'm decent at programming but new to gamedev and collision is indeed a bitch. I've been through that problem exactly, I solved that by ignoring small overlaps of collision boxes. If the character is mostly above the platform and is falling (velocity in the y axis > 0), a small overlap means he just collided from above with the object.

But since your dude is touching multiple objects, I guess you gotta store all collisions for each moment and decide which one has priority or how they interact.

Hope that helps.

Shit half the ideas /v/ comes up with aren't even game ideas, they are just settings.

I don't really see what's so hard to understand about "a simple 2D platformer".

It's a jumpy-runny game with a bit of shooty at best.
Obviously no special gimmicks. Call it a bad Mario clone if you wish.

The "gimmick" is obviously the setting (or the blatant pandering) if you will.
What do I know, maybe turn around gender roles or some nonsense. It's not like the ton of strawman arguments out there can't be turned into some fantasy world that would work for a video game.

Rudimentary spell UI is up.

Now you can see the spell you're making, sort of!

Now I just need to fix the parser so that it doesn't accept bad spells.

It depends on how you use it.

If you actually make your character a physics object it is actually very likely that your game will feel like crap.

A lot of programmers advise against it, mostly because players expect a certain feel to character control that's a bit more instant and precise. It's not impossible to achieve this if your character is a rigidbody, but it does mean you have to add a ton of extra code to your character in order to restrict it and make it feel more natural to control, whereas if you make it a regular game object, you just have to program in artificial gravity and add some impulses for colliding with physics objects.

Bring up the documentation with f1 and look up scripts. Scripts are essentially user made functions which are defined by the user. A simple example of a script might be for data manipulation, such as this array creator:

The walking/running (can't tell which, kind of looks like she's determinedly speedwalking) frames look like crap. Especially the legs, they look lazy as hell and almost like you disregarded the bone structure. In frames 1 and 4 the leg in the air should be bent a bit at the knee, to loosen it up, no one walks that rigidly. In frame 3 the leg on the ground is bowed painfully backward and the knee of the leg in the air looks too smooth, the whole leg looks formless. All the legs in general are horribly lacking in anatomy. She doesn't really have calves, her knees are blobby, the foot appears like something you just put at the end of a leg rather than an actual structure with joints that interacts with the leg and ground to allow smooth movement. Her hair should bounce, it appears mostly fixed in place which will look very awkward when animated. Look at some pictures and videos of real people moving for reference. And sketch a skeleton or basic form, it can be just a stick figure with a ribcage, pelvis, and joints. Make sure that moves nicely, then draw the final product over it (on a new layer).

The pigeon toes in the top line are bothering me as well, especially since it looks like it's supposed to be a battle stance, but I get it if you think it's cute.

You have no idea what you're talking abooooooooooout. You can control a physics object just fine by using certain functions, like setLinearVelocity (in box2d), which lets you directly control where the object should move to. You can directly control how it responds to collision, gravity, jumps, etc.

You just have to not be a retard and get it right. If most people are that retarded then it's not the fault of the physics engine.

I'm gonna try and make it so you can customize your character to some extent.

There are several things which bother people around here when it comes to more pixelated graphics, and that's mixed pixel sizes, misaligned pixels, and rotated pixels

>Mixed Pixel Sizes
When a game has assets with what's essentially different resolutions.

>Misaligned Pixels
The art has big pixels, but some of the art isn't aligned to the pixel grid, making it look like pixels are overlapping other pixels.

>Rotated Pixels
The art is rotated, and thus the pixels.

When I refer to pixels above, I'm talking about in art, not the actual pixels in your monitor. The reason these things bother people is because they shouldn't be physically possible in classically styled pixel art, such as in the NES and SNES eras.

I was thinking of making each weapon have a Advertisement or Trailer that kind of makes the gun seem cool.

So at least the player would enjoy a new weapon even before purchasing via the funny/over hyped adverts. I need ideas.

I personally have nothing against rotated pixels and if that's used then I have nothing against misaligned pixels, though I do dislike differing pixel sizes. That being said, just because old games are old, that doesn't mean they had attractive pixel art. If a game has crappy pillow shading, no matter how old it is, it still has crappy pillow shading.

There aren't any rotated pixels in that clip though.

>>78410329
Low-res art used to be done out of necessity, and now people do it because of the aesthetic. But when devs used to make pixel art games, it was literally impossible to have a pixel rotated. Pixels were always square, always the same size, and the sides were always parallel to the edges of the screen. But now people are drawing low-res sprites and upscaling them and rendering them in high resolutions, so that their 16x16 sprite is actually being rendered on 2048 pixels, and they can turn it any which way they want. But it looks like shit, because the pixels are no longer parallel to the edges of the screen, and that draws attention to the fact that people are using low-res sprites out of nostalgia or laziness rather than out of necessity. Pixel art doesn't actually look very good, it would usually look better as regular high-res art, but people do it for nostalgia's sake. If you follow the rules that old games used to play by, you can get a retro feel, which is cool. If you put mario's original sprite into super meat boy, it will look like shit.

Caring about this kind of thing is the graphic design equivalent of being a grammar nazi. Everyone is going to do it anyway, and it doesn't really matter as long as people are having a good time, but when you understand digital art, you die a little inside every time you see it.

I'd like to collaborate with someone, but it would have to be a near platonic love-affair. Their skill-set isn't terribly important; you can't get anywhere with a savant who you can't communicate with. As long as you really understand each other, progress is inevitable.

Dude I was in there today while people were setting up, met some of the guys from team meat, a few people from blizzard, was pretty sweet.

Sucks you can't come though mate.

You are forgetting that pixel art vs HD sprites is also a huge jump in skill.

I'd love to be there as a dev next year. Would be pretty exciting. I spent most of my time at the Monster Hunter booth last year though.

I'd be too afraid they wouldn't live up to my impossible standards that caused me to just waste 3 days implementing one shader

Zeredek. Since he died I'm just going to do the next best thing, and call my game mamoreal 2. If I ever get interviewed for my game I'll say my name is Zeredek and talk in a bad Finnish accent.

These are the thoughts that motivate me to gamedev.

Not really, people who can't draw tend to make shitty pixel art as well. One is just easier to do with a mouse,

Thing is, especially with mixels, people draw high-res backgrounds and then do the tiny resolution RoR style character sprites. They could have just made the character sprites the same resolution as the background, and it probably would have looked better, even if they're not very good at art yet.

So you're saying that you'd have to be really good friends with them. Like so good that you never fight or try and bring each other down with your personal problems.

Sounds more or less impossible, every friend I've ever had is kind of a drain. Maybe I just have shitty friends, but I like to think that people are sort of universally shitty in some form or another, and that in getting close to them, you have to be exposed to that at some level.

I really do need slightly better friends, though. I deal with anxiety, and somehow the people who gravitate towards me manage to be more fucked up than I am. I like to consider myself a pretty average person.

My BFF and I are close enough that we can finish each other's sentences, and our other friends think we're like Penn and Teller; we just know each other so well that comedic timing comes naturally to us. You don't have to be exactly the same person to share that kind of empathy. I understand what you mean though. It's hard to make friends like the friendship they extol in stories. Everybody's so "busy" and detached these days.

I have a counter point: It doesn't make sense to argue the nostalgia angle because a fair amount of people are into it who have no frame of reference for it.

Pixel art is just another form of abstraction, one that was brought about by the limits of our engineering but has endured because it retained its appeal.

There's also an appeal from a creative standpoint in that making pixel art has a low barrier to entry. Sure, it's easy to discern good from amateur pixel art, but amateur pixel art is, ultimately, still made of clean units. Compare to folk art in traditional media, where flaws and crudeness are more readily apparent.

tl;dr: You're not a grammar nazi, just autistic.

The very simple way around this is to upscale the entire scene after you've drawn it.
