Age of Empires thread? Age of Empires thread.

Which is your favorite game in the series and why? And your favorite civilization? Favorite unit? Have you ever made a scenario in the editor? Is there anything you don't like about the games?

You can also post related stories and other cool stuff ITT.

I'm probably the only person on Earth who likes 1 and 3 better than 2.

Always was impressed at how many Paleolithic cultures Ensemble put into AoE as regular civs...not sure how that would have balanced out, or if that meant any of them were unique at higher ages.

I don't think 'Paleolithic' is the word you want to use.

Neolithic, then. Stuff like the Yangshao.

I don't recall there being any Neolithic either. I think the closest you get are the Choson/Gojoseon, which is only rumored to have begun around 2000 BC-- by all records, it only popped in at the 7th or 8th century. Most are contained within the 1000-200 year range.

I was missing Indian cultures. They were more relevant to the big picture than the Far East Asian ones. Yamato were completely out of place.

In AoK they had too much focus on the migration period tribes instead of the later kingdoms.

I always had my autism flare up when I noticed they use totally unrelated cultures to stand in for a faction during the campaigns.

Persian Goths, man.

1 for me. Way comfier, and I prefer the style and enjoy the ancient Mesopotamian/Egyptian/Greek flavor more than Medieval. Though nostalgia might be playing a big role in it for me. I freely admit that AoK flat-out improved most everything about the gameplay (most importantly balancing the damn siege engines into something less than instawin buttons), but I tend to play Rise of Rome way more. I don't know, it just clicks better with me.

My favorites are AoM = 1 > 3 > 2
Nothing against 2, but the medieval thing just didn't work for me
