The Secret of Monkey Island had great atmosphere, not sure how typical that is for adventure games, but it really drew you right in.

Starfox too.

Hardwar is just about /vr/ and that has some of the greatest atmosphere I've experienced.

I didn't feel the atmosphere was that great in VII. All of the areas felt like scenery instead of a living breathing world, and on the map screen the towns were just plopped onto the middle of a grassy field.

For a PSone/N64 game, it still looks incredible in my opinion. The whole game just breathes atmosphere, and was one of the few games that showed me that a full 3D game could be just as good as a 2D game.

Never mind that it was pretty fun, and could still manage to be pretty challenging. For being a licensed movie game, it was one of the best.

There's something about that game that puts me into this serene, childlike state of wonderment and wanderlust.
