Hey /vr/
I want to get into the Kyle Katarn saga of games, from Dark Forces 1 to Jedi Outcast.
Do the sourceports for the first games (apparently named DarkXL) keep the experience as vanilla as possible?
Does Dark Forces 2 have a sourceport as well?

I think you can get all these games on Steam.

I know, and I do.
I merely want to run them in a source port. Sorta like you run ZDoom over Doom or ECWolf over Wolfenstein 3D.
I'm merely wondering if I have any alternatives and such.

>The point of this project is to allow people to play Dark Forces in high resolution, on windows in either “classic” mode (no new features) or “extended” mode. All modes will benefit from newer control methods like mouse look, high resolutions and color depth. The extended version will get new features such as real-time lighting, slopes, dual adjoins, vertical adjoins, better model support (md2 and/or md3) and more.
Doesn't this answer your first question?

It does, thanks.
As for the other question, a simple Google search hasn't told me much, and as far as I can see DF2 runs off a different engine.

First one runs well in dosbox and has DarkXL in the works.
Jedi knight just hates running on anything but windows 98 without problems. Windows 8 hates the DDRAW.dll acceleration fix that works on windows 7 and most wrappers give me shit including glitch purple lightsaber and serious instability.
Even tried running it in a virtual machine on windows 98 but it's slow running on my machine (i5 3250M 2.6ghz Dual core with 4 threads possible).
either way, shit sux and the only "engine recreation" for JK isn't anywhere near usable.

I played Dark Forces in DOSBox on my Mac, and it works swell. DarkXL looks neat, but I'm wary of how it reconstructs the physics. Jedi Knight's a fucking bitch to run on anything, so it might help to prepare an earlier Windows OS for it.

FWIW, I didn't have issues running JKDF2 on Win XP or Windows 7. Fantastic game, and has a lot of sentimental value to me!
