Mostly you need to play one that doesn't fucking suck. As you may have noticed, almost all MUDs fucking suck.

Your choices are basically:

New Worlds: Ateraan if you want to roleplay
Discworld if you want goofy shit all day every day
Lost Souls if you want to play with character builds
Achaea if you want a super active community and are willing to pay for it by being milked of cash F2P style

If you are less fantasy-inclined and more into simulations, try 8Bit MUSH.

In game economy, ANSI art, a capitalism system, sound capabilities (for the webclient).

It has several dozen puzzles and you get to make your own lot, company, products. There are arcade games, board games, etc. that people have coded (such as Cards Against Humanity, Monopoly, and Things in a Box).

In terms of other MU*s 8Bit MUSH is like a heretic younger brother, but it is probably an easier text-based game for someone who is not a fan of text-based gaming to get into.

Another picture of someone's shop for traditional games.

Coding is pretty simple and there are extensive help files for coding, not to mention several players who can help you.

Very. The only reason to play it is if you long to immerse yourself in /b/'s social environment in a realtime interface, i.e. if you don't know IRC exists.

Heh, alright.

Will I have to worry much about the whole character build stuff or can I just go around and roleplay the whole time?

Would VR be willing to play a MUD together and make MUD general[s]?

It does use its game mechanics rather than just being freeform like typical MUSHes and such. (If you're into totally non-crunch roleplay, look on mudstats.com for MUSHes and MUCKs. Beware, the space is heavily furry-dominated.) So yeah, your build matters. It's not the kind of place where you have to write up an application with your character history before you can play or anything, though.

Ah, awesome. I'm not really fond of furries or lesbian roleplaying MUSHes and I do like the videogame elements. I'll check that out.
(One of my first experiences in the world of MUSHes was me and a few (irc) friends following a weird guy we knew in a lesbian roleplaying MUSH I can't remember the name of. It was absolutely horrifying.)
