I never played any of the classic square games of the snes era.
I am between ff4 and chrono trigger. Which one do i play first?
>>
Anonymous 07/06/14(Sun)18:58 UTC+1 No.1744282 Report

Well, Chrono Trigger is more polished but much shorter. That should be what you keep in mind when you choose.
>>
Anonymous 07/06/14(Sun)18:58 UTC+1 No.1744283 Report

Chrono Trigger is nothing special but it's far from being as terrible and boring as FFIV, so I say play it first even though I would recommend other games

Such as? I want a good jrpg. I just finished earthbound and i feel a void because i know that there wont be anything this good out there. And yes, i played mother 3, too.

Super Mario RPG, FFV, Live-A-Live, Bahamut Lagoon, Rudra no Hih?

Though if you consider Earthbound to be the pinnacle of videogaming then you are not all too picky and CT should scratch your itch well enough

I didn't care too much for it either. It did some really neat things but all the cool minor details are right at the start of the game, then it falters.

Chrono Trigger is a decent, enjoyable game. So naturally if you compare to the Final Fantasies and Phantasy Stars of its time it seems like a fucking masterpiece, and that's how people remember it.

THere are better games than Trigger, because, while, it's a very good story, it's not a very good game. But Saying that Bahamut Lagoon or the goddamn Rudras are better games than CT is objectively wrong. And by "ojectively", I mean exactly that. They're all-around worse.
>>
Anonymous 07/06/14(Sun)19:31 UTC+1 No.1744393 Report

Man, a lot of bummers in this thread. I went back to Chrono Trigger about a year ago and loved it. Definitely one of my favorites.

I remember enjoying FF4, and it's likely more challenging and probably among the more solid FFs. I'd go chronologically.

It's a great game and it's right to be remembered as such (and yes OP should play it), just not the best thing ever made.

We're all here to have fun though, and we all have our favorites I say. Some of my own favorites are much much worse than CT after all.

Rudras had better gameplay, the novelty of spell-writing wears off somewhat fast but CT has no novelty at all, press A to win, and Rudras are an legitimately challenging game. Rudras has better graphics. Rudras has far better music, by far. I won't argue the story but Rudras' story had a more interesting presentation, with the multiple scenarios that can be played at any order at any time. Why is it "goddamn" and what are the objective reasons it's all-around worse?

If you're looking for a game with interesting characters and can tolerate a game that starts off fairly linear before opening up into a full open world that has yet to be explored, go for FF6. It's probably the best Final Fantasy game.

Dummied out commands, removed items, crappy translation, censorship, lower difficulty...you don't want that.

I've played worse JRPGS by far, and I like the team moves and you fight enemies in teh same environment you explore things that makes the world seamless. That's about it. Maybe it's because I didn't play the game at the time. I can understand why people can like it, by all means. Nice art direction and great pixel art and memorable music, and a again a novel battle system. But the sheer level of hype it has baffles me (like with Final Fantasy VII and Legend of Dragoon, but those are whole other kettles of fish for another time), and I can't tell if that has something to do with it's price and rarity, or that its price and rarity stems for its hype.

What mean to say, like there's something missing. I guess the obvious answer is a memorable story, but I've played plenty of RPGs that I liked that didn't have stories I liked, like every Front Mission ever. It just feels empty to me. Not wows, no reason to play it again over any other games in my backlog.

Granted, I'm one of those people who actually genuinely likes Kouldelka and the Lunar games, so feel free to dismiss everything I say as the ramblings of a loonie.

he's right. chrono trigger has great graphics music and pacing but insanely easy and shallow combat. FFIV's combat is equally bad as chrono trigger's and everything else about it is far worse.

>They can't possibly not like it some kind of genuine way, that'd be madness! My opinion is law! They must be HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!! HIPSTERS!!

Seriously people are allowed to like things you don't like, and they can genuinely dislike those things. For example, Chrono Trigger is my husband's favorite RPG, it just feels really too bare bones for me. My favorite is Parasite Eve, and he always feels overwhelmed by the stat and weapon customizing. PE just isn't the game for him, and CT isn't the game for. We don't argue or break up over it. We just accept it.
