I saw the one where they looked at a Walkman with absolute disbelief.

I mean, shit, when I was 8 I knew what a fucking gramophone was. I didn't have to poke it with a stick for two minutes trying to assess its threat level.

I don't think it's a situation of "kids these days" as much as it is that they just get sheltered dumb kids to do these.

Mine's a personal problem. I wasn't that dumb as a kid, so I can't empathize with kids who aren't excited to learn about a new piece of technology. They approach this stuff with contempt at the ready. I was fascinated by and salivated after every bit of old technology I came across when I was a kid.

Of course they're dumb and have contempt for new things(assuming they aren't putting it on as an act) but why hate them for it? The humor comes from their simplicity. Can you imagine them trying to play Super Mario Land and getting pissed because it offers a real challenge unlike most modern ios/android games? It would be hilarious, like watching DSP, only not as sad

A lot of kids would most likely hate that the majority of games are meant to be played in one sitting, and don't let you save.

Also, the lack of hand holding/checkpoints would be frustrating too.

Assuming they play the real hardware that is.
>>
Anonymous 07/07/14(Mon)01:48 UTC+1 No.1745452 Report

If anything didn't age well of the original game boy, it would be the screen. The monochrome nature of it did hinder the experience, but most games were designed in a way that used graphics that would could associate with immediately. You see a fire hydrant and your brain immediately colors it in as red. However, the Game Boy's screen was pretty bad with ghosting.

I think that video, fake though it is, was supposed to be measuring their initial reactions and not their opinions on the game mechanics. Plenty of games did have hand holding, checkpoints, and saves, anyways. Link's Awakening isn't that much different from the more modern mobile Zelda games, for example.

I think today's younger generation has a looser grasp on the concept of quality vs quantity. Generally, as long as new games/tech have enough different gadgets to keep kids occupied they will sell huge numbers regardless of quality. It's about having the latest gear.

I hate to say back in the day but back in the day a game wasn't necessarily desirable because it's the latest in a huge franchise; quality was a factor as well and I feel that's been gone for a while now.

>we got more portable stuff now, wats the use? all game consoles are the same except for portability right guys?
>seems old, must have bad games
>ohnoe we has to press buttons
So, yeah besides those, I would actually agree that the Game Boy isn't desirable when compared to newer consoles. I wouldn't want one because of the low resolution, unlit, green screen alone. Not to mention that the newer hardware and programming technology used in the DS/PSP/whatever allows game developers more control over level design and story telling within games. Newer games seem more fundamentally enjoyable. Also, I never grew up with a Game Boy, so I think I'm speaking from an unbiased perspective. A game should be able to stand on its own, not because of some historical respect I owe it.

The kids didnt make me cringe, most knew what it was, after all there are like 13 million owners of 3DS in the USA, and Pokemon is still popular, they have to kinda know what it is. There is a cartoon with some creature and a dog that has a character which is a humanoid Game Boy.
I also think this is very scripted.

What makes me cringe is parents who think that nowadays kids are smarter because they grow with smart phones and tablets without buttons and know how to use them well. Lets see if this kids who never use buttons at all can beat Super Mario Bros.

I don't know. I know that the Internet helped me tremendously when it came to gaining knowledge (branches of government, foreign politics, history of electronics, history of manufacturing, biology, etc ...); in fact most of my knowledge of vidya is thanks to the Internet. While it's true that casual Internet browsing is correlated with a decrease in brain volume, I would really be ridiculously ignorant without the Internet.

Kids have emulators on their phones and PCs and as long as they own any kind of console, they are aware of the retro games available for download.

I've been more fascinated with advances and experiments in the various technologies rather than the actual games themselves, so new or old it's always neat to figure out how people did things and the lengths people went to just to get one thing working just right.

Even if it was staged, hopefully one of those kids gets an interest in learning about what came before their time. History is a fascinating place and it's great to keep it alive even if it is just to see the next generation shudder in horror at it.

Which ones did you have? Game Boy's library is quite big, and it has a lot of master pieces, but also a lot of shovelware, like the PS1 or the NES.

Also, I can understand someone born in 1994 to think the original GB is too old, by the time you were 8, the GBA was already out.

Holy shit. You just blew my mind. I've been trying to remember this game for over a decade since I only ever got to see it played once at a friend's house.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.

'95 here, the only games I enjoyed on the GBA were Metroid Fusion and Super Dodgeball Advance. Most of the games only looked fancy and lacked substance.

If it's any consolation, I gave a one of those slim gameboys to my 12 year old cousin and he was completely enamored with it, much like I was with one of those Game & Watch games with the backlit colored screen reflected off a mirror. Old, but really novel and still fun.

He's probably the kind of kid who'll be in a future /vr/, one of those people who look at old tech and get a feeling so complicated. It's a certain kind of worldview where retro things are like unearthed relics. They're things people of the past have owned and worshipped with weird markings and unique histories. You can look at a hu-card and feel like there's a whole world there that might have hidden treasures and new experiences.

Little girl says-
>why can't it be called Gameboy Girl

Fun fact: Nintendo DROPPED the Gameboy name for this reason. The DS was going to be called the Gameboy DS, but it was changed to just DS to be "gender neutral".

Political correctness is poison.

I tried Wario Land again recently and boy is it hard to get into these days. Sure, it's a perfect fit for the blurry OG Game Boy with its large sprites and slow movement but oh man, it's just TOO slow. Everything takes times and Wario comes to a full stop with almost every action he makes.

The sequels may changed a lot from the first game but they were certainly a step in the right direction.

Except that's wrong. The DS was a gamble with no official name; it originally stood for Developer's System and was meant to stand alone with the Game Boy line continuing side by side. Of course, that didn't happen because the DS exploded in popularity and now the Game Boy name is dead.

Yes it is.
Gameboy >>>>>>> DS

As a name. It just screams PORTABLE VIDYA SYSTEM.

DS just sounds boring. I would have rathers Nintendo just make pink Gameboy systems and call them Gamegirls.

On a side note, I recently played Earthworm Jim again(pure delicious love), and the level where you whip the dog to get it through the level would never make it in a modern game.
Animal abuse and all.

Sad to see how far we've fallen.

Yes, the fact that you're so worked up over video games has indeed shown how far we've fallen. Well, how far you've fallen at any rate, but I don't know you personally so you may not have had far to fall.

Lots of things keep happening to games, TV, movies, comedy, etc.
Cumia being fired, GOT getting chewed out for the incest rape scene, Nintendo being bitched at for not having homosexual marriage in one of their games.

Can you imagine a world where no company takes risks or does anything funny out of fear of hurting some idiots special snowflake autism syndrome?

You don't seem to understand though.
A minority of bitchers can now cause the majority to suffer as companies try to comply with demands or face "problems" that I can't outwardly mention on this board.

Oh, to hell with it, I'll mention the problems.
Feminists and faggots and tumblr scumfucks creating stinks over political incorrectness and forcing companies to change their policies.
SEE- Nintendo caving to fags.
Also, Rockstar caving and revising GTA Vice City because of the "kill all Haitians" butthurt.

>I don't think it's a situation of "kids these days" as much as it is that they just get sheltered dumb kids to do these.

i think it's honestly a case of faking for the sake of a decent vid, im only 18 so gameboy and gameboy color was really before my time and gba was my first handheld
i still played some original gameboy games on it and enjoyed them, i also knew about things like typewriters, gramophones, those really old TVs with like a 1 inch screen, this stuff isn't exactly obscure and lots of people my age now about stuff long before their time and can respect them

also there is a kid talking about buttons as if modern consoles don't have any themselves or buttons have somehow become obsolete
