Retro horror titles Anonymous 06/24/14(Tue)16:46 UTC+1 No.1712487 Report

I've been getting into horror games lately. Maybe it has to do with me becoming a young adult, maybe I'm just going through a 2edgy4me stage, but horror is fun.

I noticed there are a shit ton of PS1 horror games for some reason..

Fuck... If I could get any game a reboot or sequel it would be that one

Just going to post some screen shots from obscure quality retro horror games.

That the Blair Witch game? I couldn't get it to work right on my computer. It was like it was constantly in fast forward. Blew y mind when I saw Stranger though for those couple of seconds.

I can't believe you-know-who hasn't shown up yet. Maybe the secret is not to discuss the nature of horror at all. I'll just shut up and keep posting interesting screenshots.

Yeah. There are throttling programs you can try to use or you can install 98 within DOSbox or you might consider picking up an early 2000s era laptop for twenty or thirty bucks and just think of it like a game console.

It's a P&C. A lot of good horror games are, especially ones that are technically retro and aren't just RE clones. Happily you only said "horror games" in your OP so we don't have to worry about a derail based on semantics.
>>
Anonymous 06/24/14(Tue)17:20 UTC+1 No.1712547 Report

Pretty much all horror games until Alone In The dark sparked the REvolution were P&C adventures, or even text parsered. Basically to expand your appreciation of horror games we'll invariably either go back far enough that the gameplay mechanics aredifferent enough you might have a hard time getting into them OR we end up moving out of what is technically retro and risk the wrath of the retro police like I was doing to start with.

Something that's not retro, but a damn fine game. Do a reverse image search. If I utter its name the retro police will come down on us like the hammer of an angry god.

In retro news, I've been hitting the Amiga pretty hard. I'd really like a CD32 but I'll probably end up just settling for putting a cheap floppy emulator in my A500 using that new hack I learned about right here on /vr/ the other day.

One of the best parts about Darkseed 2 is that unlike the first one, where Giger himself did art and designs especially for the game, all the Giger art in the sequel is just poorly pasted together from random paintings. It looks cheap in a hilarious way.

Did you know that the reason that fall down the stairs killed him is that he ended up impaled on a particularly long slender phallus? True story.

That definitely sounds like bullshit, but I'll choose to believe it since it would just feel so wrong if Giger had died in a way that had nothing to do with phallic objects. He would've wanted it that way.

Deep Fear's alright. If you're interested I wrote a review of it a while back and a blog that has died as soon as my survival horror autism started to fade away: http://thisshitaintscary.blogspot.fr/2012/11/game-review-deep-fear.html

Deep Fear has a special spot for me despite it's lack of ammo conservation which is a big - for a survival horror game. It's amazing soundtrack makes up for it.

Deep Fear is almost hilariously bad, it's saved by the poor voice cast, weirdly written characters, and incredible soundtrack by Kenji Kawai of Ghost In The Shell fame.

I actually liked this game. Gameplay and controls needed more refinement, but holy shit was the atmosphere frightening as fuck. I also remember cheats that let you play as various enemies throughout the game.

I'm playing RE right now, loving it. I had to use a walkthrough two times and both for stupid reasons. I missed the door with the sword key that leads to the dogs, left the key in the box and wandered the mansion for an hour before giving up. The second was that I couldn't figure out where to get the final crest and it turns out I had to insert the blue jewel in the tiger statue. It said that tigers have a blue and red eye, so I thought I had to get the other jewel before that works, really pissed me off that one.

I hate it when I waste an hour or more on stupid shit like this.
