Earthbound 07/22/14(Tue)05:47 UTC+1 No.1791382 Report

So I beat Earthbound for the first time ever. I played Mother 3... 5 years ago. Beating Earthbound makes me remember and appreciate moments of Mother 3 a lot more.

That being said, I tried to go for the sword of kings, and gave up when Ness was lv 75. End game, I was 88 and the final starmen were really the only difficulty after that.

ITT: Earthbound general

According to that image you can use Jeff to spy and see if the Gold Starman Super has the Sword of Kings. So you could have just tried to encounter them over and over and ran each time they did not have the sword of kings so as to not become overleveled.

True, but that takes longer than an autowin

Or maybe even in this case if you're using an emulator, a save state might be a necessary evil in order to get the Sword of Kings without getting yourself game-breakingly overleveled.

I just framed my Mother world map, it's not in the greatest condition but I think it adds a bit of charm

I just got it on the Wii U thanks to Club Nintendo.

pretty much in love with the game so far. Just rescued Paula and I'm at Twoson.

I'm playing it for the first time in years, like, since 2006 or 2007, it's really fun.

Correct me if I'm wrong:
Ness and Paula are american.
Jeff is british.
Poo is chinese.
Correct?

Ness is from Onett, Paula's from Twoson, Jeff is from Winters and Poo is from your butt[/spoilers].

Ness is from Onett, in Eagleland (a kitschy Americana kind of country.)
Paula is from Twoson, also in Eagleland.

Jeff is from Winters, which has stonehenge - so I think it's safe to say it's somewhere around where England would be. (That doesn't explain the snow though: it hardly ever snows as far down as Stonehenge - maybe they blended the UK with Canada?)

Poo is from Dalaam, which could really be any asian country. Lots of people say it's closest to China in terms of landscape, but I think that's closer to the Himalayas in Nepal and the architecture and decor of the buildings seems a lot more like India.

I've been trying to get the Sword of Kings for about an hour. I finally got an item, which turned out to be Brain Food Lunch, from a regular Starman. Which is also a 1/128 item, I'm fucking mad.

I beat Mother 3 last night. I had insomnia afterward because I came upon the shocking realization that there will never be a sequel.

The series is just great. It doesn't ever take itself too seriously and the gameplay is simple enough that you can chill out and play it after a long day at work.

There won't be a sequel because Mother 3 ended it. I mean, where would you go from there?
I'm glad this asshole got what he deserved.

I'm definitely giving this a shot. I don't have super high expectation for it, but I at least hope they balance the game properly to minimize grinding.

The style and music of the game is really similar, i guess they're naming it that because the Mother series creator says he's not going to make any more of the games, but i'm pretty sure he said that after earthbound too
>>1795356
Yeah, since it's fanmade and all, i think they could work out the kinks that we all notice
>>
Anonymous 07/23/14(Wed)07:20 UTC+1 No.1795379 Report

The battle system is more complex than people give it credit for because they ignore the buff/debuff war that should be happening alongside the damage war, and instead grind until basic attacks can get them through - then complain that the battles are too simple. FF has trained people to play these games like fucking idiots.

I only wish the party in M3 had been as diverse as EB's. That's all.

Can't be, because Mother 3 was already in development back then, wasn't it? Since it was gonna be released for the Nintendo 64 originally.

>>1795379
I was like this when first playing Earthbound, then played Mother 3 and noticed debuffs are actually useful and now I'm replaying Earthbound and enjoying it a lot more because of them.

>>1795385
Yeah, the one thing that turns me off of the first game is the graphics, i got to used to earthbound and mother 1 just bores me now, which kind of sucks, but that remake looks like it's gonna do the game justice, and look awesome too

The scrolling HP bars and lack of random encounters will be nice as well and probably open up the game to people who are averse to the conventions of older RPGs.

Yeah, and the difficulty spikes that were in Mother 1 will probably be leveled out to reduce all the grinding too, it's pretty exciting
>>
Anonymous 07/23/14(Wed)16:24 UTC+1 No.1796134 Report

Yeah, fuck the Sword of Kings. Like the other autists who got it, I was way over-leveled by the time it finally dropped.

The game isn't exactly a challenge to begin with, but adding these types of drops in really takes the fun out of playing. Both because your party is now untouchable and because of the time spent in limbo doing the same repetitious bullshit over and over and over for hours (possibly days).

Likewise, the gutsy bat and magical frying pan are effectively worthless and unecessary.
>>
Anonymous 07/23/14(Wed)18:54 UTC+1 No.1796531 Report

It's a mistake to grind for those 1/128 drops on your first playthrough. If you get them by luck, then that's great, otherwise, just continue your game, don't grind for those, they aren't necessary really.

I got most of the rare drops on my second playthrough, which I did on the GBA in japanese, since I had already beaten the game before, I wanted to make a 100% complete run, getting the SoK wasn't really as painful as getting the Magic Frypan from the chomposaurs. I got the other drops fairly easy (the pendants, and Jeff's weapon), but I still couldn't get the Gutsy Bat from the Kraken Bio, I still load up the game from time to time to see if I can get it, so far, no luck. One day.

Not true, the auto win is factored on how high your strength is, you can use those two items to boost your strength and auto win enemies that would take a few more levels for

The thing I love about Earthbound is it produces this feeling of purse nostalgia. You feel it whether you played the game as a kid or not, and it just feels special and reminds you of the good of your childhood, even if most of it was bad.

I feel that way with most of Square's SNES RPGs because I didn't play any of them until adult age. They captured something special with their output during that time that they haven't been able to replicate.
