So I just finished Crisis Core not too long ago and started VII shortly after. I'll be watching Advent Children Complete and then playing Dirge of Cerberus for storyline purposes. I've played the game when I was younger but never got passed the first disc. Now that I'm older it brings a different experience that's still nostalgic and fun regardless of the game's age.

Warring fanboyism aside, what does /vr/ think about this game?

Also, Final Fantasy VII/Compilation of Final Fantasy VII General Thread?

I'm playing it again right now for like, the dozenth time. It's one of my favorite games, as cliche as that is. It's not perfect by any means, but I really do enjoy the setting, characters and story. The materia system does kind of make everyone rather generic, but I like its versatility. It can make for some interesting playthroughs.

I'd be curious to see what you think of it after playing through Crisis Core first.

The translation improves drastically shortly after Midgar, but overall the game hasn't aged as well as the hype it had makes it out to be.

It's a good game with a great battle system and a decent story. But it suffers from what a lot of JRPGs suffered from, poor translation.

Crisis Core is very much a mobile game. 7 is epic, truly epic. Everything else is just supplementary material compared to it.

Getting Knights of the Round and beating Ruby and Emerald it's all great

Timeless classic. I replay it often. I honestly can't think of any real complaints other than the super easy difficulty. Maybe the midi instruments could be a bit better?

Well I agree, but I was talking from a story perspective. Obviously none of Zack's backstory and stuff was around when I first played it, so to come into FF7 with that might give you a different impression.

It is there. Zack being Aeris' boyfriend, Zack fighting Sephiroth and losing, then dragging cloud out and getting killed by Shinra soldiers. All there in FF7, you just have to pay attention. Some of it is missable.

I just find it rather tragic that while FFVII is a really solid FF game that preserves and expands on classical mechanics, delivering a great gameplay experience as well as a good story that had lighthearted moments as well as drama is primarily liked and remembered for how darkness dwelt within everyone's souls as they dyed their hair black and listened Nine Inch Nails, with this completely misguided sentiment nevertheless setting the tone for spinoffs and future installments in the main series.

I grew up with it, and it's still one of my favorites. I think it's a game that most people who like JRPGs should play at least once.

The hype and the milking they did a few years back really didn't do any favors for the game though. A lot of people don't actually remember the game for what it was.

I understand your point. But crisis core starts 7 years before FFVII(1997). And Before crisis starts 6 years before FFVII (1997). So there is a possibility that during the time that Zack suggested Aerith to sell the flowers , in Crisis core, that she could have been selling these flowers in the pits of Midgard section 8 , in before crisis. What think?

The rampant goofiness is honestly one of the biggest draws to this game for me. I don't ever remember laughing so hard at a video game that wasn't intentional before. Drama was pretty decent, (for the limitations it worked with) I suppose. Hard for me to say since I played the game as an adult. Chasing Sephiroth was much more fun than dealing with generic evil empire #73411. I'm still bummed that Jenova was such a minor plot device though. Speaking of plot devices, is there a more shoehorned one than the Weapons? You can totally tell they're just there to provide a Godzilla-style city raid, and I love it.

So far storyline-wise, it's interesting to see the settings, places, characters and various monsters across CC and VII over the course of the story. It makes it to be more in-depth engrossing experience going through the games if you enjoy VII's story for what it is.

There have only been a few instances so far that refer to events around and after the "Nibelheim Incident" that obviously don't feature anything about the conflicts of Angeal and Genesis, but the story still flows evenly since you can assume Cloud obviously doesn't remember thanks to Hojo heavily experimenting on him before Zack escaped with him in tow whilst in a vegetative state and his current identity crisis. Again, deepens the mythos though and makes it more fun.

For me at least.

>what does /vr/ think about this game?

I think one of the reasons this game was popular was because of the MC's personal story. Many players projected themselves into Cloud because they could relate to him. Cloud was a loser. He never became a soldier. He was far from being perfect. Nevertheless he still managed to gain the respect and prestige that he wanted, even though it was only from his small group of friends, by saving the world.

this, exactly, is why I can't enjoy the game as much as I want. I can tell it has an interesting and complex plot, and decent character arcs(especially Cloud), but the translation muddles everything up. The original game is already a bit stretched and probably has too many elements for the player to keep track of, but the localised versions just make that much more difficult.

I'm probably just as nostalgic for this game as the next person, but in hindsight, I didn't like how the setting transitioned from one thing to another. When you first start out and the game places you in this shanty town environment where everything is run down and there's all this disused technology, the game has this really cool punk / metropolis vibe; but once you leave Midgard and start to explore more conventional towns and settings, the game starts to lose appeal for me. I just wanted a Final Fantasy game based entirely in Midgard, or a similar setting.

Theres still some of that tech around, Junon, Gold Saucer, the other Mako reactors around, Rocket town, etc. It kinda makes sense that Midgar is really the only place thats like that, since its got literally what, 7 reactors supplying power to it, where as everywhere else has maybe 1 reactor around it.

What is wrong with AC(C)? I understand the storyline is pointless filler and nothing of value happens, but it brings to the table fully-rendered, realistic models and backdrops of characters and areas from FFVII we got used to in the form of blocks and paintings. I love the game itself, but I thought the novelty of seeing what I mostly knew as basic polygons in high-end cgi pretty sweet.

None of the spin-offs are necessary, but there is something wrong with DoC and CC (shitty new characters and trying to outdo the grandeur of the original plot). AC is just a cgi wankfest, enjoy it without thinking about it and the FFVIi universe isn't ruined at all.
