Anyway, the GrandMaster arcades if you're into competition, the DS one if you're a normal person.

Tetris Classic by Spectrum Holobyte.

The one with the blocks.

DX is normally what I play, GBC with no real frills. There's also The New Tetris for N64.

getting to level 30 in NES Tetris is a much bigger feat than playing through invisible Tetris. the best TGM players can't beat the best NES Tetris players in NES Tetris.

I'd disagree. Yeah, top TGM players won't be as good at NES players at the NES version, but the opposite is true as well. Of course people who focus on a particular version will be better at that version. But the requirements to even get to the TGM2 credits roll are pretty impressive, and only a handful of westerners have even made GM. I doubt either task is significantly easier than the other.

Not to mention, a lot of the difficulty from NES tetris comes from the limitations of the controls, such that actually surviving at level 30 requires crazy-fast arrow tapping. Those limitations are removed by Arika innovations like DAS and IRS.

Of course, NES Tetris isn't a bad game by any means.

Commodore 64 Tetris is excellent just for that theme

It's not the controls, it's the physics. In the newer games, you could theoretically keep moving as long as you had room. In the older games, if you touched a brick, you have very little time before it actually stops.

BPS' Famicom Tetris played weird, but I love that theme.

I agree with you on that. but getting to level 30 (00) is still a bigger accomplishment t's been out 15+ years longer than the TGM games and AFAIK only ONE person has been able get to level 30 verified. don't get me wrong beating invisible Tetris is a hell of an accomplishment, but there are still what dozens? of players that can do it? I'd put that feat more on the level of maxing out the score of NES Tetris.

I really enjoyed Tetris for the Nintendo DS. May not be retro but it's the best version I played
