I love the atmosphere in RE:3.
As you walk down the highly detailed city streets obstructed with all types of refuse, you hear moans and the crackling of fire off in the distance.

I fucking love RE 3. It's probably my favorite, but I haven't tried RE:MAKE yet or ZERO.

I played 2, 3 and 1 in this order, and my favorites are 3 > 2 > 1

To me 3 just looks better, has more action and the controls are better. Also Jill's clothes look kind of slutty in this game which is a bonus

RE2 felt too much like a throwback to RE1. At least RE3 actually allowed players to explore most of Raccoon City and not have most of the game set in a police station.

Lkes:
>Introduced the ability to run up stairs without clicking and the 180 degree turn to the series/genre
>faster paced than other REs. It's almost an action game in some ways.
>randomized elements to puzzles, enemy locations, weapon locations and ammo locations. so it's almost never exactly the same twice
>the dodge move, while a pain in the dick can save your fucking ass at times

Dislikes:
>The plot is pretty throwaway
>The dodge move is touch and go unless you spend hours and hours mastering it's use
>the only original weapon in the entire game blows ass (mine thrower)
>making your own ammo makes the game too fucking easy, as you can just make tons of freeze rounds or magnum ammo and then just kill everything effortlessly.

Not a bad game overall, but the ammo making mechanic does break the game. It's even worse than game breaking elements in FFVIII IMO. It just gets a free pass because standards outside the RPG genre are much lower.

RE3's kind of middle of the pack for me:

>REmake
>RE2
>Revelations
>RE1/Director's Cut/Deadly Silence
>RECV/X
>RE3
>REZero
>RE5
>RE4
>RE6

I like it more than the more action oriented REs where the series' identity was totally lost amidst the "top kek, I like SHOOTING!!!!" gameplay elements. However, RE3 isn't as good as other classic entries because it really is broken as fuck and lacks any real challenge. Also it's own spiritual successor (Revelations) is worlds better with an easier to use dodge system and customizable weapons is an excellent example of how NOT to break a game with a customization element.

But since I rank RE4 as second worst entry in the series, no one will take anything I say seriously

I've just started getting into RE. I got CV back in 2000/2001 but gave up after a few hours because I thought I had wasted too much ammo (last thing I remember was fighting 2 stretchy-armed guys and being in a lab where some creatures escape from a large glass tube). My friend rented REmake once and I played it for about 5 minutes.

I burned a copy of the Saturn version, and every once in a while I would pop it in and play for 15 minutes, but today I finally decided to sit down and start playing it for real. I've been able to explore a good bit of the mansion (or the upper levels anyway), but it keeps crashing when I try to go through a door.

It's probably random, but I've gotten superstitious that it's happening because I open the door right after a camera change, so I stand in front of a door for like 2 seconds before opening it. But sometimes I'll forget, the screen will fade to black, but the door animation never loads.

I guess I'll try cleaning the laser on my Saturn, and maybe burning a fresh copy if that doesn't work (current one is anywhere from 6-10 years old).

REmake > Revelations > 3 > 2 > 4 (as a RE) > 1 > Gaiden > Umbrella Chronicles (Only saw in YT) > [huge gap] > 5
I like RE4 as a game, but not as much as a RE title

3 did the whole town in chaos thing. At the time, I got into SH genre because RE and Silent Hill had modern urban settings with explorable interiors that other games barely did, I didn't know what I was getting into, but I ended up liking Horror because of that.
Then there's the Clock Tower and Park which are similar to the mansion's decor and backyard.
And finally, the hidden laboratory and last escape, which seem to be the staple of the series.

RE3 is ok, shame it completely killed the series, gameplay-wise. It was reviewed slightly too harshly back when it dropped, but honestly, it does deserve some stark criticism for the pointless new bullshit it introduced, Nemesis encounters aside. It also started the annoying trend of Jill's entire character changing in every RE game she appears in.

>RE5 had something vaguely to do with the rest of the series, while RE4 was "Leon's big adventure" and had less than nothing to do with anything at all.
>the plot of RE5 effectively ended a lot of the standing storyline/s, serving as the MGS4 of the RE series (a final entry in other words) It is plot wise what RE4 SHOULD have been, honestly
>RE4's level layouts were all either hallways with things to shoot at or small shoot out areas. RE5 at the very least had things like the swamp and the catacombs that added more classic RE-like elements (like crest hunts and puzzles) to the fold
>RE5 perfected RE4's gameplay style. It's faster and has better ideas for an action game in it (Face it, RE4 is an action game first and everything else second)
>The hotkeys allowing you to switch guns quickly and ability to reload 2 guns at once are excellent example of the above point
>no need to babysit a moron who dies constantly and can't fight back at all in RE5 (unless you take Sheva's ammo away)
>no ":WHATRYABUYINSTRANGA!?!?!?" in RE5

I could go on, but I think I've made my point. And the only reason RE6 is below RE4 on the list is because of how unfocused it is. It's actually a better game than RE4 in segments and the gameplay is worlds better.

The problem with RE6 is because said "better segments" usually last half an hour at most and then are followed by 3 straight hours of fluff that was obviously tossed together with no real design in mind. If RE6 had been shortened to one campaign that consisted of nothing but the GOOD ideas that made the game, it would have been far better than RE4.

Its too bad really. They actually had one game worth of good content in RE6, but it had to be a 25 hour long epic. So now there's one game worth of good content spread across 4 full games...

Actually, Capcom had started work on the original version of RE3 first, then Sega paid them to put it out on the DC instead. That project became Code Veronica.

While that was in production, Capcom started up a new PS1 RE3 with a different game engine (from what I can tell from vids and such, it seems to be the N64 REZero game engine), but they still had the engine for the PS1 version of CV sitting around so they took it and made Dino Crisis with it.

Basically, REZero, RE3 and DC were all "quickie" projects that they kind of tossed together while RECV was in production.

I don't have any sources to provide, but play DC and RECV and pay attention. The running animations and the camera movement as well as the general speed of both games are exactly the same. DC is obviously made with an earlier build of the RECV game engine.

Also worth note is that DC2 seems to be made with a very early build of the Onimusha engine. Once again, no sources to post, but pay attention to the games. The characters in DC2 don't have all the dodge moves, but the running speed and animations are exactly the same as Onimusha. And Onimusha was in the works as a PS1 game originally, so it's not unlikely that they just took the engine and made something else with it.

Apparently Capcom also reused assets and such from early builds of RE4 to make parts of Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground as well. And the original version of RE4 is what became Devil May Cry and the PS1 version of Onimusha was originally meant to be REZero.
Then there's the reused assets from RE5 that made it into RE6...

So Capcom does have a documented history of reusing assets and transforming projects into different games entirely.

>Jill was marginalized completely so we could pretend that the rivalry was always Wesker v Chris ALONE
You do realize that Chris was the MC of RE1 rite? Jill was basically an afterthought to add replay value. And Making the big, epic, beefy final battle take place between a sexy chick and a superhuman killing machine reeks of the RE movies too much for my tastes (and Capcom's apparently) At least when it's Chris vs Wesker, it feels more natural.

>(and frankly Jill has more reason to hate his guts than Chris does)
Without Wesker turning Jill into a slave, there's a lot less hate. Turn her into that slave, and she can't be the MC, because Chris and Sheva have to free her. You can't have it both ways.

>Chronicles already ended Umbrellas BS and anything new was invented just for sake of itself.

RE4's inventory was OK at best and was just there to occupy OCDfags. RE5's inventory was faster, more intuitive and better suited to the gameplay both games share. And the Hotkeys are definitely better suited to an action game (witch RE4 is as well)
Also, literally all of the puzzles in RE4 were "shoot something and something else happens", pull the lever, something happens" and my favorite: "kill 4 dozen guys, something happens" RE5 at least tried.
RE4 is effectively a half assed action game that's still trying to be a horror game and failing.

RE3 is bretty good, some retarded plot holes and stupid dialogue notwithstanding. I really enjoy the fact that we were finally given the opportunity to explore Raccoon City in depth, and the ammo mixing, item randomizing and alt. story paths added true replay value. I'm not even bothered by the more faster paced, actiony gameplay, because in this game's context it makes sense. Jill already knows from past experience how to deal with the situation. Literally your only options for supporting a company are:

>Buy their game

Sure, -now- you can bitch about stupid game mechanics on the internet, but back then, if a company tried something different and it "failed" even if it was successful the series continued. Look at X4-X5-X6, it was a steady downward spiral in quality, yet the series continued because of its popularity.

That's the easiest way to dodge. The time it takes for you to raise your weapon is your evasion window. Which is why you see a lot of JP Merc runs pulling out a knife with their back turned to the enemy; it takes longer to ready the weapon that way, giving you a longer evasion window.

Now, if your weapon is already raised, you have to attack at the instant you're being attacked, which requires you to be more precise than raising your weapon at the right time.

PSN only has the Dual Shock version of RE 1 with the botched soundtrack. You need to find a copy of the original black label Director's Cut.

Dual Shock version replaces the soundtrack with something far, far worse. The Sega Saturn version has an exclusive battle mode which features a zombified Wesker and gold Tyrants.

It also has no a 2nd skin for the 2nd set of Hunters and Lab-creatures you see; and another little surprise. Also, no autoaiming. Also for the visuals the 3D models are more blocky; but the 2D backgrounds look a lot better. Also 2 exclusive extra costumes which imo are the best ones (not hard considering how all other extra costumes in RE1 are shit).

The Saturn version is my personal favourite. The lack of auto aiming makes it a little more hardcore, I love its visuals and the small things it's added.

The battle mode is already incredibly fun (though a bit on the hard side!).

The PC version CAN be the best version in terms of smoothness and visuals ; but depending on your hardware and OS it can run awful, depends how lucky you are or how much effort you're willing to put into it.

Also it is good to know that SOME versions of RE1 are easier than others, for instance in some versions zombies have less HP, however I don't know for sure in which version exactly it is the case and there is no info about that anywhere because it's not a widespread knowledge (most RE fans don't even know about that). I think that in the NTSC Saturn and ORIGINAL PS1 versions the zombies have more HP than in the Jap original releases and than in the Director's Cut release. Just, not sure really.... Only further experiment of every version released in every region could tell that for sure.

Yet it's the version of the original RE1 with the most content.

I'm not counting the DS version because it has so much changes in terms of how it plays and looks (new 3D models, new zombie AI, 'advanced' controls etc etc) it's really not quite the original anymore, even in 'classic' mode.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I loved 0 too. I can understand people hating on the many of the bosses in it though. Regardless of that, I really liked the atmosphere.

Long box PS1 version doesn't have auto aiming either.

Anyway, original Director's Cut is SLUS-00551. Make sure you have the seller read you the serial before ebay hunting.

'Longbox' was never released in PAL (where I live) so I never really played that. The funny thing is that I'm pretty positive the original (not director's cut) PAL release of RE1 did have autoaiming (just like the Jap version do).
Could be wrong though, I haven't touched a shitty PAL conversion in a long time.

But I hope
she married a nice guy and had a family and is away from all this virus nonsense
