I just started this game and I have no idea what I'm doing. are there any mandatory classes or trap skills I should avoid?

is this game even good or should I be playing might and magic instead?

Not really, in 6 and 7 some classes/skills were kind of mediocre but in 8 they all have some role to play. Don't multiclass unless you know what you're doing, though.

Nothing is mandatory but for a smooth playthrough you want one person who can deal with locks/traps, and at least one person who can cast healing spells. A dedicated caster is also a good idea.

It's a great game, play it.

can I mod the game to have 2hu portraits? I wanted to make a cute girl party like I did in etrian odyssey but after looking at the art and hearing the voice samples I don't think I want to anymore.

ok I played for a while and I don't understand some things. how does movement in combat work? what is the difference between dexterity giving you more attacks and speed giving you more swings per attack? how do I pick up an item directly into party inventory instead of moving it to a character first?
