I've been trying hard to figure out how to create a virtual 2nd monitor on Windows 7. I don't want to use a physical 2nd monitor, but I need 2x more desktop space. I searched it and I still can't seem to find the answer I"m looking for.

I right clicked the desktop; selected "screen resolution"; it says there's only 1 monitor; pressed "detect"; right clicked the desktop; selected "screen resolution"; a virtual display was apparently there; selected monitor or "display" 2; there was no obvious way to view it without a physical monitor; tried selecting "make this my main display"; tried pressing "apply"; it moved all windows on display 1; now can't easily view display 1.

I tried pressing the "print screen" key to take a screenshot. When it took a screenshot both displayed appeared attached to eachother as 1. The screenshots revealed windows are able to be dragged from 1 display to the other. Clearly the mouse cursor can move past display 1 and onto display 2. Confirmed for virtual 2nd monitor or extended desktop. But there's still no clear way to easily view it.

I searched it; found program recommendations: microsoft's "desktops" and "dexpot".

Microsoft's "desktops" creates a 2nd desktop but doesn't create a virtual 2nd monitor and doesn't offer ways to view the "extended desktop with it".

Dexpot also creates a 2nd desktop, doesn't create a virtual 2nd monitor, and apparently doesn't offer ways to view the "extended" desktop with it.

I still can't figure out how to easily view the extended desktop without a physical 2nd monitor. How do you do it?

You need to write a simple window application that acts as a virtual second (third, forth, etc.) screen and a simple device driver that tells windows it is an actual screen.

If it's so simple you do it.

The best solution given so far has been UltraMon and MirrorMon.
It "mirrors" the extended desktop so you can see it.
But it doesn't actually switch to it so there's a slight delay.
I'm also pretty sure mirroring it
takes more resources than actually showing it.
But if I can't find any better solutions
then this is likely what wil lbe used.
